I bet there are quite a few furloughed guys flying at Cape right now. I bet once some of the airlines will start recalling we will see some active hiring by Cape. It's just a matter of time...

That's a fair bet! Lots and lots of furloughed 121 pilots taking refuge at Cape at the moment (me included!).

I start the internet-based training on the 16th, and I'll be in HYA on the 23rd to start the hands-on stuff.

Default Cape Air summer of 2009

I called and left a message. Told them I was interested in part time flying. They called back the next day. I missed the call and now I only get the machine again.
What's up?

Can someone tell me how senior KSLK (Saranac Lake NY) or Albany is? Does anyone know how many are based there and if you could get it out of training?

SLK is currently being flown by BOS based pilots who overnight at the outstation. I'd like to see it open up this summer and be an actual crew base again (beautiful area, and CHEAP!), but we'll see.

ALB is definitely pretty senior. Most of the guys over there now are those who were displaced as a result of the Indiana flying closing last year, and are pretty happy with their commuting lines.

Well that kills my dream of working at Cape Air while living rent free at my grandparents lake cabin in the Adirondacks. I saw on the Cape Air web site that SLK was a crew base and got excited. Thanks for the update anyway.

Well, keep in mind that I was told directly by the D.O. and system chief pilot that they really don't like to have crews staying overnight in hotels at the outstation. It costs them money for the hotel and per diem, so they'd rather have someone live there. Last summer SLK was a base, so once the bid packet comes out for this summer (hopefully within the next couple weeks), we'll see what they're going to do with it.

Now, here's the part you won't like. Currently (and all this is subject to change), the only FO bases up for bidding are BOS, ALB, RSW, and SJU. They typically want to be able to utilize FOs in such a way that they could fly any trip with any CA out of the hub, rather than being tied to an outstation. But, as an FO you can build time very quickly and upgrade within a few months. Then you'll have your pick of the outstations.
