Thats not ATP. ATP does have one student log pic and the other log dual given. On cross countries one student logs pic the other is a safety pilot. If someone is giving Dual then the instructor is getting paid.

No, sorry I worded that confusingly. They do this outside of the flight school. I am just saying that is what people do at my school to build hours outside of their normal job. There are places nearby that rent multis and thats how they build their time. Sorry for the confusion!

I thought people bought multi time if they were either trying to get their 250 for commercial, or didn't have a MEI rating and needed to meet minimums.
Thanks for clarifying though.

Yup, flying as a drop pilot is tough to come by. But now, even banner towing gigs are few and far between. Its brutal! These are not the days to be picky about what kind of flight time you get. Take anything you can get. Be the nicest guy you can and make all the connections you can. If you are persistent enough, something will open up!

I agree with other posts, I had to give up flying for a while and got a couple of lucky breaks. For this line of work you will always need extra cash.
Example; Hey want to come and fly for me? Sure. Okay well i have my insurance rep give you a check ride, your current right?( $200 later to the local fbo) of course!

To help with CFI might I recommend The Flight Instructor's Manual, part of the late William Kershner's flight manual series. It's close to 2 inches thick and is basically a meticulous, step by step guide of how to teach someone to fly an airplane. I discovered it on my own but my current commercial/cfi instructor recommended it strongly and actually did spin training with Kershner several years ago.

I did aerial survey...10 hours a day, all PIC cross country & racked up close to 400 hours in 3 months. I got hooked up with the job through word of mouth...hang out at the local airport and ask around for long enough and something is bound to come your way. None of these jobs get posted on the internet, and the ones that are rarely get updated and are often years old. You can also find out which airports have skydiving ops (they have parachutes next to them on a sectional) and see if they are hiring skydive pilots. Stuff like that works pretty well.
