I commute ORD to east coast. 1 hr difference. No big deal. But just 1 leg commute. 2 or more leg commute is not sustainable for the brain.

I’ve done it too (DEN-MSP). It still sucks more than staying in the same time zone, as you typically have issues getting to work early enough or getting in too late to make the last flight home.

In my case, I had one flight in the AM that could get me in on day of to start PM reserve. Anything earlier than a 0900 report meant that I was coming in the day before (on my day off). I was SOL if I finished a trip past 2000, and had to spend the night at the crashpad and come home the next day.

Two things make me laugh about this thread.
1. “Bite the bullet and move from 135 to regional”. I’ve done both. I was even a 135 CP/DO. There may be some 135 operations that are great but most regionals blow away 135 in pay and QOL.
2. “Don’t commute for a regional.” I would say the inverse. Don’t uproot your family for a regional unless it’s easy to do. Such as not owning a house, spouse not working, no kids or kids not in school. Things such as that. Regional bases can close on a whim.
In your case, I’m assuming by “West Texas” you mean ELP. Look at places where you can commute, preferably on your regional metal. IAH, DFW, PHX... others?

Don't commute, I two legged it on occasion from MSP to ORF, then went to an airline where I ended up commuting from MSP to SEA. Upgraded to captain and moved to SEA. Living in base is a whole different job. Oh, as the other dude said though, I am single, no kids and don't have a house so moving was easy. I can 'commute' to see friends and family in MSP when I feel like it.

What’s keeping you in “west Texas”? (Which I take to like Midland, Amarillo, San Angelo, etc...)

When people say “don’t commute for a regional”, they don’t mean uproot your family, they mean start looking at airlines with bases drivable from your home. If there aren’t, pick one that’s the easiest, shortest one leg commute and move outward from there.

Thanks for the advice. Yes I am in ELP but there is a ELP-SEA direct every single day, so I think that would be doable.

If there is only one, then you are probably using it as a "paper backup" for your actual commute as commute policies tend to require two flights. This is unless you leave early enough that a two leg can count as your backup. I commuted many years transcon two leg, but it's a tough one and the biggest advantage there is making sure you never are "comfortable" at the regional.

Default Envoy

Just go to Envoy which is what I should have done. Be based in your own State. Don’t commute to a regional, it is so not worth it!

One flight a day, 3.5 hours each way.. I would avoid SEA if you will be commuting from ELP.
If looking at commuting I would probably look at a different base, probably some of the ones I mentioned such as DFW/IAH/PHX. One flight a day would suck for commuting. Also, keep it as short as possible. I’ve done 1-1.5 hour commutes when multiple choices. Those commutes really aren’t bad.
I used to live in El Paso and probably know your boss. Great city.
