Best place to live as a pilot?

Where you are based is gonna be the best to be with your family.
I would say the Pacific Nortwest. Outside of either Portland or Seattle. I have lived in both areas and loved it. Can be expensive (depends on where you are coming from) but living on the Washington side of Portland is a bit cheaper and no income tax in WA and no sales tax in Portland. So I would suggest Vancouver WA/Camas WA areas.

i'd avoid the northeast if i were you, winter flying up there will be even worse than in the midwest. If you're working as an instructor and trying to get to a regional or major eventually, i'd think somewhere down such as TX, you'd have options to get based at several locations down there, and it's warm (or hot) depending. As i remember it, housing isnt overly expensive in texas, which is kinda nice, just like the midwest.
No state income tax in Texas. Plus you can get a 500000 dollar house for 200000. Housing and land are still cheap in Texas. My parent live in San Antonio and that place is crawling with entertainment also Austin is right up the road about an hour. Schools are not bad down there either. On a side note my parents sold their house in the Washington D.C area for over 2 million and purchased even a larger house on a larger lot for 750,000, not a bad deal.

Florida for the instructing and no state income tax. However, as a married-with-kids regional pilot the commute will destroy your marriage, relationship with your kids, and everytime you leave a small piece of your soul will die. Commuting back into Florida will be akin to picking out 3 hookers from Nigeria and having unprotected sex with all of them. You may get burned, you may not....but the chances are definately not in your favor. I shun everyone I know away from the dreaded Florida commute. I get away with it because I'm young, have no kids, and my girlfriend apparently likes it when I leave with the notion that I may or may not comeback.

I Agree with wannebepilot. I've been everywhere in the states and the place where I like the most is the SOUTH. I live in Mobile, ALABAMA and I just love it. It's a typical southern city, no too small not too big. People is really nice, very very friendly and laid back jaja. It's the perfect place to raise a family. The city is very quiet and you have wonderful beaches just 1 hour away. Besides the cost of living is really cheap. You can buy a really nice house for 150-200K in a nice quiet subdivison. (I'm still in the real estate bussines by the way) when you start making more money for 300-400K you can buy a big ass waterfront house!! Go and buy a waterfront property in FL..... Taxes for cars/houses are nothing. School system it's so so, but with the money you'll be saving in taxes and housing you can probably afford a private school (depending which one off course). Weather is gorgeous you get warm weather in march and not get any cold weather till mid-november.
This is an example of a southern city, I'm not saying you should move here, but I would really consider a mid-size city in the south. Louisiana is a really nice state too. I personally don't like florida for living, and I've been in every corner of it. It's really expensive, crowded and mostly I don't like the people, specially in Miami area.........
Many people underestimate the south, but QOL is great.
By the way here in Mobile there's a Cessna pilot center that is needing CFIs like crazy, they'll put you up flying 24-7 if you want to. I know the owner and is a nice environment to work, plus new well-maintained aircraft. Really proffesional people. If interested PM. GOOD LUCK !

Go, to ORD. (Skywest, TSA, Eagle) If it is warm enough for the 2016 summer Oylmpics then it's nice enough in the summer for me. Also, not huge relocating cost since you are already in the midwest and it is one of the few places in the country where the area surrounding the airport is not a dump (Bensenville, Rosemont, Elk Grove, Park Ridge ect.)

As dvd said...pick you a mid-size southern city and you can't go wrong. They're not too big, not too small, have stuff to do, affordable housing, great places to raise families, and in my area the school systems are great. As for 121 flying, there are several flights a day to many hubs for 121 flying. Forget houston, atlanta, miami, etc.. You will be miserable.
