Yes, buybacks used to be illegal because they are fraud.

They didn’t make them, but they absolutely enabled them. Buybacks are stock manipulation, pure and simple. They should and will likely be illegal in the future.

Not absolutely illegal, there are sound business reasons to do buybacks... if your stock is low and you're sitting on a pile of cash the vultures will be tempted. Less of a threat for airlines, because a corporate raider would not be allowed to just liquidate and sell off the assets because they're worth more than the stock.

But there will likely be some limits.

A quote from a professor from Singapore...whose name I forget, partly because it was 3 meters long...not an exact quote, but here is the gist of it:

"America is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. One of the reasons most Americans don't understand that, and what makes it so incidiously dangerous, is that in America the corruption is legalized."

We're also better off and have more opportunity than most nations. At least the rules are known by all, and subject to change if enough people decide to do it.

Also everybody who resents us, or fears that we'll meddle in their foriegn policy/military adventures, takes cheap shots at us from the gallery. Kind of like hating on Tom Brady... it's popular, but he doesn't care, and it doesn't change the fact that he wins.

Rick,
Your reply is a non sequitur.
My post has a very different meaning if you read it in context to the post of yours I was replying to.
The danger to a company of piling up too much cash is real. The fact that a pirate can come in and loot a company that is fiscally responsible is a form of legalized corruption, which is what my post was referring to.
Your reply, without showing what I was responding to, changes what I wrote.

USA isn't even in top 25 for social mobility.

I don't know that Tom Brady ever tried to kill or displace the coach of the other team.
