Kirby also said it would be foolish to not be ready to be in a position to respond quickly if demand rebounds from 50-100 overnight. While I don’t believe this will happen, at least the company acknowledges the need to rapidly back build capacity if it should rebound.
I do think this chain of events adds on 3-5 years for regional guys getting hired, and those hired likely will be back to the realm of college degree, min 1000 pic, multiple types etc and create a new population of regional lifers.
Also, for all the geniuses saying college degrees aren’t important... it’ll be the difference between you working at 7-11 and an office job with benefits/decent pay/stability etc when you’re furloughed. Get the degree, make sure it’s non aviation related. Once you get that degree, get a masters. The laziness amongst the uneducated in our field is truly astounding.

I was an A&P before I went airline. Many people told me I should have just stuck to flying and I would have been better off. This may be true but as I am now furloughed from a regional I am glad I got my A&P as I am working full time doing maintenance. Yes I would rather be flying, but I don’t have that option for awhile. At least I can pay the bills and afford kibbles for my dog. Trade school is a great choice and a great back up. Even better would be a degree that includes certificates in a trade. A few aviation universities provide a path to a 4 year, an A&P, and flight training.

Everyone at my airline was furloughed. So my A&P is irrelevant to my furlough. There wasn’t a high enough rung on the seniority ladder to save me. Maybe I would have gotten to a major but who knows. If by “hole” you mean debt, I went to community college and got an AS for about 4K that included my A&P, some bachelor programs include it as well. A bachelors degree that includes learning a trade Can be very valuable in times like this.
