Most companies will allow furloughees to bypass recall so long as someone else will take it. Might not need LOA

My assumption was based on the OP just leaving the industry (as I think that's what he was pondering).
If a LOA is available that changes the dynamics completely. But we don't know what his contract allows for.

Thanks for all the comments. It’s a lot of good inputs to consider. I’m surprised that 3 pages of comments I haven’t gotten a smart ass comment, snide remark, or political rant.

I put the question out for an LOA to my company and I’ll see what they say.
I am definitely in a similar boat as you. It’s one thing getting stuck in the left seat to wait out the recovery process while building PIC time and finally getting paid a livable wage.

It’s another to get stuck in the right seat at a regional only making 40-52k with poor QOL. Yeah....... That’s not a long term solution for someone with a family to support.

Do what you feel is the right thing for you and your family.

If you can see yourself doing it. Go! Even if you return to flying later you could regret the road not traveled.

Now on the seniority side of things. If you build time while there’s a drought in turbine and can get pic time eventually you’d be way better off. But the career is feast or famine. If that reality makes you want to go for the tangible now then go and remember you could always come back. But you will be returning to a regional as a FO at the bottom of the list.

Lots of different replies. Based on my understanding, OP is facing furlough. I say he allows the furlought to occur (joining thousands of dudes in the same boat), and pursue a potential second CAREER when that happens.

when hiring resumes ("if") his resume and career track
will look like everyone elses, which may be a good thing. Furloughed during COVID, outside nonflying job, recalled and back to cockpit.

Next best option is LOA.

worst option is "quit".

I say "let the furlough happen" then go from there.

From the OP's initial post "Airline hasn’t sent out furlough notices yet but I’ll probably be safe if they do. "

Sounds to me that he's thinking of straight up bailing since upgrade didn't happen as expected.

Ahh makes more sense. I just misunderstood, my bad.

Some airlines let you volunteer for furlough if they’re furloughing people. And as a bonus you generally get the option to bypass until they recall everyone junior to you.

This is what I was thinking. Individual contracts vary, of course, but my airline offers three years of deferral after your first recall offer.
