I think SkyHigh has a right to speak his mind although I do agree with de727....why don't you preach on the flight training forums and educate the people starting out? If you are going on the regionals forum, chances are these people already shelled out the big bucks for school and training at which point you might as well try to make it to the big time.

I think you'd be more productive if you were slightly less dramatic (as in not trying to tell everyone not to bother) and educated the "young uns" on the flight training forum don't you think?

Most who post here are current airline pilots however the wannabes silently lurk. Isn't it true that you also are a non-flying pilot wannabe yourself? This forum is the place to get noticed.

I feel that the "drama" is warranted. Even though most here have already blown a fortune they perhaps haven't wasted their entire life yet. As I mentioned prior it is my position that most are in denial about their future prospects and could benefit by taking an honest assessment of their situation once in a while.

I dont think a person posting a rant is going to change any ones opinion on flying for a career. SkyHigh is making it seem like everyone spends 100k plus on their flight training and a non aviation related degree. I am going to college almost free (scholarships), and flying at a small FBO. Do you think that if you go on to an artist forum and rant about how the kind of career move would suck, that they would change their mind.Probably not. Flying is not a normal career move. No one goes "well that looks fun" and becomes an airline pilot. Most are the people that have grown up loving the smell of Jet-A. Yes times have changed, but people still have dreams. Spending 30k on a car is stupid, not using a rubber on a one night stand is stupid, but following a dream career is not (As long as you do it is a smart manner).

Skyhigh, you have a valid point. As said before I don't like how you go about it. You should have gone into the clergy because you preach way too much. I have a huge problem with those that dive in without doing their homework. I have an even bigger problem with those that say that what didn't work for them, won't work for everybody else. Don't forget, you're the one that took the risk of going somewhere that folded because of the hope of a quick upgrade.

First year pay sucks. Regionals flying 70 and 90 seaters for the same rate as they flew 30 seat turboprops for 20 years ago sucks. Do your damn homework and don't jump at the first chance, jump at the one that is right for you.

I know many people that have taken pay cuts to save the company outside of aviation. I know many people that due to increased healthcare costs, and pay increases that don't keep up with inflation are making considerably less excess income than they were years ago. These trends are going to continue as long as people don't grow a spine and stand up for themselves. I think a couple strikes right now would be a good thing for all of us.

Ok I think skyhigh is a bit excessive with his rant, but I do agree with him.

You are a fool to argue that a 100k investment on flight training is the best place to invest. Sure things are starting to turn around, but I would have never started flight training post 911. There are better ways to spend your money. I started a business about a month and a half ago, to compensate for my regional chump change. I invested 45k, my first month I grossed just over 10k, my overhead for the year is about 8k and I’m up to 3500 this month already. I just hate to see folks tripping over themselves making foolish decisions just to say look ma I fly a jet. Sure in 20 years it should pay off for ya, but I will have been retired for ten spending my time on the lake with my family.....
To each their own.

What kind of business did you start?

While I wish you the best of luck, your business just started....there are no guarantees that you will be able to retire in 10 years. $hit can hit the fan in any business too. Many businesses don't make it. If it was that easy running and owning a business, everyone would do it.
