Skyhigh, I know I am relatively new to this forum, so I might be missing something, but why the hell are on here if you think that being an airline pilot is such a bad deal????
This is not unlike those freaks that follow their ex's around long after the break-up.... GET OVER IT and MOVE ON

30K/yr for out of state tuition? Shop harder, Homer. Mine was around 6K/yr for the first yr, after which I was eligible for in-state tuition.

Skyhigh...

I'm going to put this as nicely as possible. Cork it up, let people chase their dreams if that's what they want. Myself, I paid way less for not only a bachelor's but...oh my goodness...got a master's paid for!!!! Guess what, i'm starting my MBA in spring. Look, I understand where you're coming from but jesus, don't come on to a pilot forum and ***** to people about how much it sucks. It may suck yeah, but damn it if this is what people dream to do let them do it. They know what they're getting into right now. If they get to the industry and hate it, then let them live and learn and go back to school or start a different career.

Wanna start a ***** fest? Bring up unions.

Did you know that a Pilot is one of the only professions around that seriously gets screwed out of overtime? Where else can you work for three days away from family and get paid for only 15 hours of block? Airlines do a great way of hiding things like this and definitely use it to their advantage. Unfortunately we are not business people and ironically elect other non-business professionals to negotiate on our behalf for serious issues like pay. I am all for the profession but there are tons of things that people coming into it do not know or have misconceptions about. This ultimately hurts us all by not cutting into the supply for the growing demand. A union's sole purpose is to limit supply but for some reason is unable to strike due to court decisions and ultimately gets laughed at by the company. If a Union isn't helping and a company isn't budging while profits and revenues continue to rise, where do we turn to? Ourselves? Educate others considering entry? Sit on a forum and cry like a ***** to someone who is trying to educate others? Who knows. One more thing........Pinnacle still sucks.

If this was something new, thanks for the info. But it's not. Companies have been screwing employee's for ages. We don't need anyone to tell us they are still doing it.

I'm not a flying wannabe, I fly but only for fun. I know the risks of getting into a flying career and thats why I decided to do something else for a living. Maybe in the future if things improve I'll consider it, but if they don't I will just keep flying as a hobby. While this thread would be better in the flight training section, your right about their being lots of lurkers.

Default I am on this forum

I am on this forum because most who venture here are seeking information on possibilities of life as an airline pilot. As with most publications and trade journals the majority of subscribers are wannabes. In addition there are plenty of pilots who might be dissatisfied with their career choice and perhaps one of these threads might just help them to make a decision.

My recommendation to all those who do not enjoy or are not yet ready to consider my controversial views in a controlled and adult manner to use the ignore button.

Some falsely think that once they become a professional pilot the corporate world will reward them. Why else would anyone intentionally choose to be abused?

How is a 19 year old supposed to get the truth about an aviation career? ATP? ERU?

The airlines must be the only profession where a person must invest so heavily before they can even apply for their goal job. Most are lost before they even take their first lesson. What a waste and disappointment awaits the next generation.

People need to know. You might be alright with letting strangers meet their doom unwarned but I am not.

I just read the article this evening. It was one of Abend's best, in my opinion. He accurately and concisely summed up the current situation in the industry. I did not get the same negative message from the article that SkyHigh got. Abend was honest in his criticism, but also seemed to speak to the aspiring ones out there and let them know that if they want it bad enough, they CAN do it and they CAN be happy. That's what I seemed to get out of it, at least. The article was very fairly written, and discussed the issue from all angles. Overall, very well written.
