I have seen that it is hit or miss in the SAW. I have had times where I was able to drop 2 four day trips and sometimes 3. It all depends on how quick you do this at the beginning of the SAW, but I believe it also does depend on thier grids. Most of the time if you want to get rid of something, they are going to want you to give them a mutual or better trade.

Like CRJ said though, just call planning and they will tell you what and when. A nice approach helps.

I hear there is a government program where furloughed pilots can get a free type rating from the government...anyone know where I can find information on this?

Nothing is free in live! I believe it is called the "Job placement and training act". I would check out the Department of Labor web site ( Office of National Response, Employment & Training Administration (ETA) - U.S. Department of Labor). From what I have been told and read, it depends on the state and there must be a need for pilots. It is also on a first-come, first serve basis and the money tends to run out quickly. I wouldn't count on getting a "free" type rating when you get furloughed.

I'm sure. I know someone who got a free type, but again, it depends on the state and the need for pilots. And right now, there isn't a pilot shortage. I also heard that there is a budget allotment by the government, and the funds go quick. I'd say do some research on your home state and check with the workforce center and unemployment office.

Ok question for you guys. I reported for a trip at an outstation to deadhead home (cinci). They tell me im no longer deadheading im im doing another trip with a 2 hour layover in cinci. Im in cinci i get to my gate, no plane. So I get out my paper and I read untill another FO tells me that im suppose to call scheduling. I call them and apparently they were trying to get ahold of me for another trip. Long story short I had to call the chief and explain my situation. There was nothing on the RIDS when i got there, I couldnt hear the pages since I was outside enjoying the nice weather, I dont have a pager and my cell was turned off. My question is am I required to have it on even though ive already been notified of another trip?

Nah, but I dont like talking to the chief pilot. He said I was " 2 minutes" away from getting an SD.

They can notify you on the RIDS when you pull in, or when you check out on the computer. If you are under a prior arrangement to use your cellphone instead of a pager, then I would guess that you need to be phone available during your reserve window.
