i dunno man. if some new guy thinks hes entitled to something, it shouldnt bother you. i mean you should enjoy the fact that at some point their ambition will be crushed- bigtime. just quietly sit back and watch their attitudes quickly get squashed and then laugh about it later. most pilots are type a's so of course theyre gonna be loud and obnoxious and brag and talk about how theyre gonna be this and that. and theyll brag about how many hours they blocked or credited and how quickly theyre gonna upgrade. at which point you pretend your phone is vibrating and tell em you gotta take this important call.

Truf. When all my old primary instructors got hired as little as three years ago they were sitting on two to three thousand hours with a third of that being multi time... just to be competitive. Not to mention the six month call backs and possibility of sitting in a pool for up to a year before even going to training. Now here I am just over the thousand/hundred mark and making a choice as to where I want to go? That's absurdly unfair!

Just take it for what it is. The current set of applicants had great timing, and it's pure dumb luck that we're in this position, so take full advantage of it because it wont always be this way... and be happy.

I've heard regional pilots say "Everything's OK now, United's hiring along with most of the other majors AND they are making money again."

Exactly who is making money? We sure as hell aren't seeing improvements.

I certainly don't expect anything to be handed to me - now, at least...come to think of it, after being raised in a world where all my peers ate off golden plates, I can see that even I almost expected things to turn in my favor. Haha, now College is what taught me otherwise!! It was a rude awakening, but I've worked my *** off to get where I am now. And I'm better and happier for it - definatley...but god I can't wait to move on LoL. Maybe it's just me I, but motivation can also be a curse ;-P

But yeah - this self-entitlement bull is an epidemic vastly more rampant than childhood obesity.

It's certainly not just limited to the young pilots looking to get hired. I think that mentality is pervasive in most of the Generation Y folks. The vast majority that I have talked to have this mentality that they spend 4 grueling years in college and have a look like "Where the hell is my job waiting for me with a starting salary in the $50K+ range???" Its amazing to see really how convinced they really are of all this. But then again these kids grew up glued to tv's showing nothing but rich movie stars, reality show folks getting everything handed to them and an overall story of just sit back and riches and all that you want will fall in your lap. Sad.

Point taken - and I'll be the first guy to go out there and pay my dues, but I don't think it unreasonable to expect a fairly well paying job shortly (perhaps not directly) after finishing college and flight training with over 100K in loans...of course - that is not reality, however ;-)

It would be REASONABLE to expect a fairly well paying job shortly after finishing college and/or flight training IF you brought something besides a commercial pilots license and the ability to fog a mirror to the table. The cold, hard fact is that entry level regional pilots bring NOTHING of value to the table other than their ability to occupy a legally required seat and therefore management has no requirement to give you anything more than what they are giving entry level regional pilots now.

Can't quite agree - young pilots - hell, young anybody bring to the table several things:

a) young blood
b) ambition
c) ability to be trained
d) cheap labor (for the most part unattached, few obligations)
e) naievety, stemming from inexperience (a huge bonus for mgmt)

I agree that I see a lot of this entitlement stuff happening with us young folks. I do not feel I am entitled to anything and I hope that my hard work will pay off. I will graduate in 3.5 years and have instructed for over a year by and I am only 21. I think I am very lucky to hit the hiring when I did. My comment about the TV shows is that they all suck but I hate hearing all of these older folks saying it is our fault for watching. I think that they have to take some responsibility, not just older pilots, but parents for letting watch it. And for not being stricter because a lot of my friends did not even work until they were 18.
