The problem is that NONE of the above give you any leverage to demand a high paying job upon graduation from college or flight school. You are an entry level worker taking an entry level job.

Egads!!! It's FlightSafety Academy!!!

Seriously speaking though, I read another post that addressed this very same issue. Years ago, you not only had to have a degree, but have it in Astrophysics, 25,000TT and candidate for NASA's astronaut program .

Today, the hiring minimums are totally different. There's been a tremendous swing in the "corporate culture" and philosophy of many companies. Also, there are more people that are engaging in pleasure travel than there was in the 70's & 80's.

Default Entitlement or Respect

I'm not sure which one is worse, the sense of entitlement or the lack of respect I see in generation Y.

Some, yes.

Kind of like the reason everyone from Riddle is automatically considered a douchebag.

As both, its all coming down to proving our character. I know my role and shut my hole. Havent earned anything, and I know Ive still got work to do.

Im all in favor of those 200 hour arrogent prick getting knocked down a ring or six. Go to it cause even Im getting fed up of all their bragging.

There is plenty of both....from all generations, young and old and everyone in between.

Don't paint us all with the same broad brush simply because of our birth year.

A regional airline is an entry-level job...but that doesn't mean we can't (or shouldn't) desire higher wages and workrules. That is especially true when you consider that a 70/90 seat jet is not an entry-level aircraft, despite it having become one at the small jet providers as it has replaced former mainline aircraft like the F28/100, DC-9, 732/727, etc. As such, its only reasonable to demand higher than "entry-level" wages to fly such aircraft.

The 50 seat RJ has supplanted the Beech 1900 or J32 as the "starter turbine" for many airline pilots, myself included. That said, it doesn't mean we should continue to accept whoring ourselves out to fly increasingly larger aircraft for increasingly smaller compensation.

Isn't that counter-your-own-argument there???

Anyway - read BoilerUP's post above...

I love this sense of entitlement bs. "Yeah those greedy kids, they think if they fly a 20 million dollar plane they should be able to afford a house, and then they want some sort of retirement, they all want something for nothing blah blah blah!"

Maybe because as of late housing has doubled, and first year pay at skyw is the same as it was 10 years ago?
Next response, “but in a few years you can upgrade and double your pay“. Yeah if you want to uproot your family at your expense and move across the country, or commute and be gone 5-6 days out of 7. Good luck saving for a 46,000 dollar down payment for your avg 230,000 house on 30-50k a year. Just incase you haven’t heard you cannot get a loan today without putting 20% down, because of the sub prime mess.

I beg to differ, skyw is not an entry level job, flight instructing maby, or flying freight etc.

Ok, rant over.

Hmm. The sense of entitlement thing can go both ways, I guess.

On one hand, if you have a 250 hr wonder fresh out of the puppy mill who thinks they're entitled to a job at the majors within 5 years and is willing to do anything to make that happen, including flying 70 seat jets for an alter-ego carrier somewhere, that's definitely not a good thing for the profession.

On the other hand, if someone fresh out of college/flight school is thinking "Geez, I paid 100k for rather specialized technical training and will now be operating a $40m piece of equipment with significant revenue generation capability while retaining a large amount of personal liability, I deserve more than they're paying!" - well, that sort of a "sense of entitlement" we need more of, it'd be good for all pilots.
