I don't think he was talking about the Big Sky BOS pilots, but rather a specific individual posting in the thread. Caught me up too, was about to say "well that's not very nice".

That is pretty much how it went down. Big Sky was doomed from the start because of the POS contract that they signed with DAL...nearly impossible for any carrier to be successful with what they signed. That is why Commutair opted out of the bid. They wanted the flying, but refused to get involved with the terrible offering. Smart management = smart decisions.

I have a lot of friends at BigSky. Good luck all of you and there are greener pastures in the future.

From what I have heard, working for a DCI carrier really has no bearing on a job at Delta. To answer your question, the things that would be at the top of MY list if I were in your position with your goals would be upgrade time. Not knowing your age, (but I'm gonna ballpark it at somewhere 37-45 since you said you were in the Army for 19 years, thanks for your service by the way) if you want to get on with the big boys, you need to get that turbine PIC time ASAP. Truthfully though, it might be to your advantage to find a high quality regional that you could make a career at. I say that for 2 reasons. Assuming you are 40 years old, spend 7 years at a regional then 18 at a major your earning potential is not significantly higher at the major vs. a high quality regional. But your quality of life is going to take several hits when you are junior at the regional, a junior captain at the regional, and then again when you are junior at the major of your choice (which could be a long time depending on where you go). Secondly, assuming you stay active with your reserve unit, you can make a pretty good living between your airline career and your time with the reserve unit. If staying close to your unit is important and assuming you live in the ATL area, you should be looking for carriers with ATL bases (ASA, Skywest and Republic come to mind).

Now, these are all just ramblings without knowing specifics of your situation. You can debate all day long what the most important thing to look for in a company is but it ultimately comes down to what works best for you. If you are happy where you live, working for a company with a domicile in your city or within driving distance can make up for a lot of other issues. You mileage may vary. Best of luck to you.

Thank you, I appreciate that advice. ASA is at the top of list actually and you are right. I have thought about a career at a regional. Doing other jobs than just line flying like being a check airman, chief pilot, pilot recruiter. Those guys make a little extra.

just heard from my friend at Big Sky. he said they haven't paid the fuel bill at some outstations in 6 months. he said they've got a $50,000 and $60,000 fuel bill at the place they were staying last night.

Wow that is Trans States on steroids...I'm shocked the fuel providers let it go that long!

we had pilots stranded in fredricton yesterday because the company wouldnt fly the plane up there fearing that the canadien government would repossess the aircraft for all the money we owed them. the company then tried buying them a plane ticket to get home and the credit card was denied.

the truth about things are coming out, and we are all realizing how bad it really was.

You can also do things outside the airline. Just because you work for an airline doesn't mean that can be your only source of income. A lot of guys have lucrative side jobs where they make more than they do flying the line. Real estate, tax service, and investment advice come to mind.

Oh, I know. I am an officer in the National Guard as well and do a lot with them. I met an ASA pilot that was a lawyer. I know a guy that flies for a major airline that is a Deputy Sheriff. How he does both I will never know.
