No one else has answered and want to help you. LAX and MIA have been fluctuating as an option at AE. At my interview, they said MIA and LAX were closed to new hires. Actually the interviewing line captain laughed at one of the fellow interviewee requesting LAX. When I was called for my class, they said the March 17 class has all bases open and available.

Its possible you can be sent to another base to cover. I am not with AE yet, but I would doubt it. HOWEVER, I have seen posting on APC that BOS reserve pilots have been sent to ORD to cover flying. So maybe LAX could aswell? Also, just about everyone has told me Reserve pilots will fly their butts off over 85 hours a month. It's good for pay and the logbook.

I dont know if you can still fly as an instructor. There may be something in the company's SOP. However, my former instructor is a Horizon Q400 captain and flies Turbine Beavers for Kenmore Air on her days off. So your inquiry isnt too far off, I would say it would probably be doable. But I am new to 121 regs and AE policies. I am thinking it could play into your duty times however. You may max out quickly and not be able to do a whole bunch of instructing.

Hahe, I live there so I want some more people under me. I got to get those day trips. Though seriously, FA's have recently transferred from ORD to hold a line and love BOS. See, its small base sort of. Its the third largest base but, everybody knows each other. Mostly Ex BEX, really cool guys and gals with a lot of experience. Some of them are hard core. I got sent to ORD and didn't get a warm and inviting feeling out there. All I heard was people complaining about Unions, flow throughs, etc. Too much politics for me. I feel like I can go and talk to the CP anytime I want for anything. He is a good guy. I don;t know the CP in ORD or where to find. Hahe, I couln't even find the crew room out there.

I'll second that BOS and LGA crews, in general, rock. Smallish bases, great Chief Pilots. That all goes for LAX too. Not so much for DFW and ORD.

If you are on reserve, no matter what base, yes you may be sent to another to cover flying. If you get LAX, you WILL be sent to DFW if on the SF3, or to DFW or ORD most likely if on the EMJ. When I was reserve in LA on the Saab, I think about 1/3 of my time was spent covering DFW trips.

As for instructing on the side, that's a no no. It counts toward your weekly, monthly, and yearly limits (30, 100, and 1,000 respectively). So of course the company doesn't want you filling up your available hours with outside obligations. It is in the FM1 that it is prohibited. IF you do it, then don't tell anyone, and do not log it.

I just came across March Bid Vacancy Announcement.

Go to APC's search and type in 'American Eagle March Bid'.

Good stuff there.

Welcomed aboard to those new Eagle hires. I know a lot of you are wondering about reserve times so from my personal experience this is how it's gone for me. I got hired Aug 07 into the EMB in ORD, got done with IOE in time to bid for Nov in OCT. I held reserve NOV, DEC. Got a Composite line JAN, and went back to reserve FEB, MAR. This was due to a reduction in flying and some guys that were senior to me coming from the Saab in LAX to ORD. Right now we should be getting the bid packets on the 15th and we'll find out if more line were cut or added. If things stayed the same I should hold a line, whether composite, relief or hard line but I should be able to hold one. A lot of our flying in ORD was passed to DFW in FEB and MAR because they were better staffed. Looking at the latest flow plan posted there are quite a few new hires coming to ORD so i assume reserve time will be less than mine if we stay busy and with enough line as DEC and JAN. I hope this info helps.
