Default Sick

Sick-Time was some of my best vacation I ever had at Mesa...
Mesa is not in the business of pleasing their workforce and it shows.

Really Sad but we got used to it and "their" system doesn't work. Flying was great though.

Default Mesa trashing

It really amazes me how you so called pilots enjoy trash talking about Mesa, and how you belittle the pilots currently working there. You go on to say that these pilots make things hard for you guys. You love to say "dont apply at Mesa go elswhere." Has it ever occured to you that perhaps they tried that? So what are they supposed to do? just sit on the sidelines and wait for a " good airline " to call them? While at the same time you folks continue to log hours as an airline pilot and move on to bigger and better things. Thats mighty big of you to tell someone to make sacrifices or to put someone down, when you really dont know what that person has went through.
I know I applied to a several airlines that are great to work for , but they have some issues elswhere. SkyWest is a prime example. It's great company, but if your a minority, i.e. black you can pretty much forget it. Skywest idea of minorities are blond hear blue eyed white women. Now some of you at SkyWest may get your ass on you back regarding what I said but look at the facts. How many do you have there? practically none! I was a ramp agent there and worked my way up to the flight requirements they desired, actually more than that. I applied twice while employed there, and yes I passed the sim, and the entire interview session, only to be told no. I was good enough to load the plane, but not good enough to fly. Not all airlines are like that, but IM stating that some airlines wont give you a chance to save your life; some will be of the mindset of Skywest, and some will just have there own qirks and yet they will hire some 23 year old, and think the world of him, or her only to be let down later.
When a candidate runs into this problem they can do one of two things, quit and throw a pitty party, or suck it up and make some sacrifices, i.e. go to Mesa, or some other outfit. I went to Mesa. Why. I look at it this way, At least Im typed rated.. in three jets. I did not have to pay a dime for it. Is the pay bad? yes! is the schedule bad? yes! But at least I can say I have options to move on to better things. I can at least try and make a difference in our situation while here, and if I cant then I will move on. Either way I win. I have a business on the side that enables me to weather this crap storm at Mesa, and in another year I will reach my next goal, and that is to fly Cargo for Atlas. And as for pay at the regionals, it will walways be low! Why? because they know each and every one of you is using them as a stepping stone. You will only get high pay for longevity!
I know I will get a huge backlash from this topic, but you folks ned to channel your animosity and ill will towards the right place, and not MESA pilots.

I'm sorry that you had such a tough time getting a job, but it sounds like several airlines turned you down.

Here's a number for you... how many white guys have been turned down? I'll bet far more than other than white, but then, that's the nature of the beast at a company in a state that has a tiny minority population.

But, I gotta agree with you on the blonde/blue females. We got tons of 'em. Do you suppose that has anything to do with the general population is Utah?

Sounds like you toughed it out and did what you had to do at Mesa. Congrats on that, and not giving up.

Good luck in your future flying, and know that you earned every one of those hours

By the way, Mesa still sucks !!!!

Why would someone pulling the race card because he could only get hired by Mesa fear a backlash?

mach946 - I've flown with many, many "minority" Pilots here at SkyWest - more so, in fact, than during my time at Trans States. And TW is right - before you go ranting about equal-opportunity and what-not, take a look at the big-picture. I'm taking a wild guess and saying that you have never spent much time in the great state of Utah LoL...But anyway, pulling the race-card here and pointing blame at SkyWest is inappropriate under the circumstances.

Best of luck in your career...I truly am glad you're making it work for you at Mesa.

All to happy to reply, at the time I was working at SKYwest, there where only 5 black pilots at Skywest out of approximately 1800 at the time, and I was and am still friends with them. Here is the funy thing that happened. I had a good friend that was in contact with the Chief pilot at the LAX station. He had told this particular chief pilot about me being a hard worker and that I would be a great FO candidate. the chief pilot indicated that he would be more than happy to write me a letter of reccomendation. When I told 3 out of the five pilots I mentioned earlier, they all indicated that was fine and all, but that once he saw me he would retract his offer. When asked why, they said I would find out , and that was that. To make a long story short. My friend took me to the chief pilot office and had me wait outside, while he reminded him about me. The Chief pilot was all go from the conversation. When my friend told me to come on in to the office, thats when things changed. His smile dissapeared and he immediatley turned back to his computer, and stated the following." If your already working here, that should be good enough". My freind looked at him confused and was dumbfounded. When we got outside he just said what the hell happened. I knew, and just thanked him. When I told the other black pilots about that, they where not shocked at all. Was I bitter? no. I just figured it was an isolated incident, but then another knucklehead showed the same attitude again when he stated that I belonged in the back of the plane loading it when I reaplied later on. It's not a race card. It's sometimes is though, and to point it out does not make me choose the race card. The other airlines that turned me down had there own reasons, but at Skywest I truly believe they have an issue with race. Are they a good company? NO! they are great! As I stated the folks that fly for MESA have theire reasons. None of us wants to work for a crappy company, but if you do work for one, make it work for you somehow someway. IM 38 years old and have had jobs from steel mills, slaughter housees to cleaning sewers in LosAngeles, so Mesa is a peace of cake. It all depends on your basis of camparisons, and how bad you want to reach your ultimate goal.

Mach,
It sounds to me like a case of sour grapes. Saying basically that SKW discriminates is rather bold, downright offensive. I don't work for SKW but I'd bet my bile duct that they do nothing of the sort. One of my best friends, a minority, flies for SKW and has never had any problems. Be careful what you say when emotions are involved. There's usually 2 reasons one doesn't get hired....either they just can't handle the fast-pace of these aircraft or they are huge %$@#'s. Lets just say your post says ALOT.

Oh and I've had many jobs in my life that some would say were less than desireable. I worked at Mesa for 2 years. Life there is by no means a piece of cake. Your assumptions are astonishing, just astonishing.
