I have been a Midwest First Officer for 8.5 years. This next month in October I will be furloughed again, for the 3rd time in 8 years.

Our 717's are disappearing and 273 out of 400 total pilots are being furloughed along with close to 300+ flight attendants.

16 of our 25 717's are being returned to Boeing. The remaining nine I believe are on temporary lease.

In June 08, our Management came to us and asked the Senior Captains that would be remaining after the record furlough to take a 50% paycut, which would put the Max pay for a Captain after the cut to $87/hour.

They asked the Junior Seniority Captains that would be downgraded to the right seat for a 72% paycut. 72% !!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOT !
How about Full pay till the last day...!!!

Management said that if we did not agree to this "Fair & Equitable" request, then Midwest would have to file Chapter 11. So the pilot group, said (FU)
go ahead and file, because NO Judge would ever grant a 72% paycut to a union group. So the final due date came and went, and then it was announced ( 3 months later) that the 717's would be leaving and that Republic would be coming in to fly our routes until Midwest could replace most of us with the Republic crews for only 8 months to a year.

This is in direct violation with our contract.
Midwest cannot have a company come in longer than 6 months and fly our routes, AND furlough at the same time.

When I found out that another company's pilots were coming in to take my job I was angry. When I found out that Republic was represented by the teamsters, I was furious.

Our Management using another Union Company to force us out of work and to take a 72% pay cut..

What is your company telling you?

What is your Union telling you?

I know you start service on OCT 1st....

While my Brothers are getting pink slips..

Maybe we can work together for the benefit of us all...
Not much from the IBT on this. Company pretty much threw this out there to us last month and it felt like a punch in the gut. I can't even imagine how it feels on your side.

I'm certainly not the spokesman for the RAH pilot group but just as an FYI I haven't talked to one person over here that doesn't think this deal stinks, is low and downright disgusting. We understand exactly what is going on here just as the Midwest pilots do. The question is what can we do? We can sit here all day denouncing this, saying we are in solidarity with the Midwest pilots, etc. but in the end management is going to do what they want, threaten our jobs if we take a stance, and based on past performance I doubt the IBT will do anything but cowtow to management just as they usually do.

SO.........whats the solution?

I'm sorry to hear that. I used to commute from MKE when i was working for skyway airlines until skywest took our routes away and all of our pilots got furloughed. Well guess what all the Capt. and FO said when we were getting furloughed? "Good luck buddy, that's how this industry goes sometimes and i know we are next". Yea, i do understand. I dont want to blame on anyone else, not even skywest pilots. If you guys knew that it was coming then why didnt you guys do anything about it? Why couldnt you support skyway pilots instead of waiving your hand and see us walk out. Maybe because you werent in our shoes.

I'm getting tired of this. I miss the old day when we could walk up to any pilot and start a conversation, not giving dirty looks. I hope this is a time where all US pilots become one and take control of the company and not get tossed around for $20,000 FO pay. I just hope we get fair pay and treatment from the management.

Once again, I feel your pain and i'm sorry this happened to all of the pilots out there.

I was right there with you, katana. In reality, what could they have done? RLA castrates the group from really doing anything. I was a commuter and almost always flew YX. I cannot think of a single YX crew that had the "$hit happens" attitude, but all of them were very concerned about their future at YX. Again, what could they do? It really seems that management is in the driver's seat nowadays. The cookie palace has the spin doctors working over time since the AirTran deal to make themselves look good. Most recently, this was very obvious in the pay cut plan. "If the pilot and fa groups don't accept these reasonable, industry standard pay rates, then we will be forced in to Ch11." It won't be Timmy fault.

I would love to see a sick out on 1 Oct, but there is a legal issue there. So, again, what can they do or could they have done differently? This backroom deal was dropped on everybody and proves that neither mgt grroup is interested in getting input from any labor group, regardless of the CBAs.

Why cant we just get along? hehe
Yea i just hope that we blame on the management not other pilots. What is the point of that? Isnt this the time when we have to stick together and do something about it. You know what i really want? it wont happen and i cant happen but i hope all US pilot going on a strike on one same day for treating us like dirt. haha

Did you guys file a grievance when Skyway 'took' ATW, MSN, BDL, and RDU? That was right after 9/11 and you were getting furloughed for the first time. We flew those routes for years. Can't remember when Midwest's contract was signed, maybe you were non-union at the time, or didn't care about the contract then.

I don't think these are your routes. I think since the aircraft are leaving, you can't lay claim to those routes. If the 717's were parked and they brought RAH in, it would be different.

On a side note, do you really believe Midwest will be around long? Do you really think Midwest will get those aircraft? If it were me, I'd be glad this furlough is going deep. You don't ever have to worry about ever going back. Even though it sucks to start over, it will be much less agonizing than to be close to a recall at a broken airline.

No. Parking airplanes mean they are being kept on the certificate. The 717's are going back to Boeing and will be removed from the certificate.

You should apply for a management job, then again maybe you are there already.

Yup. Not airlines, though. So back to my question, if RAH is flying routes Midwest doesn't have aircraft for, how are RAH pilots even remotely considered replacement flying? I really want to see Midwest's contract that says otherwise. If you think I'm twisting words, fine. That's what management does. If it's not spelled out in the contract, everyone has fulfilled management's desire of pilots once again pointing the finger at each other.

There are at least 5 MD-80s that Midwest owns outright that will most likely still be sitting on the ramp when RAH starts service on Oct 1st.
