Sky,

You took a chance at a start up. For every 1 SWAs there are probably 10 others that don't make it. Going to an airline that is bank rolled by casinos in LAS, well it's Vegas. You tried to get in at the ground level which would have paid off if they'd made it. You happen to roll snake eyes.

Look, Skyhigh will never accept any responsibility for how his professional pilot career ended. He will never admit any fault or shred that any of it was his own doing. To him the biz sucks, will always suck for him, will always suck for all of us, and we are all delusional losers for not admitting to ourselves how much it sucks.

By 36 years of age and a lifelong devotion to aviation I should have had better value to the industry. By then I had already expended the best years of my life and too many resources.

You quit the career by your own admission. Own up to it already.

It is really worth it to endure all the hardships and loss to merely be able to claim that at 45 you were able to fly a big plane? What about financial security and quality of life?
Life is about hardships. You choose you own path and own up to those decisions instead of saying what could have been and blame others. Neither of which you appear capable of.

Had I been able to get hired again by one of the companies that I tried for I would be laid off again by now. When does it end? For some never.
You never tried, you decided to walk away at the first sign of real trouble and say goodbye to this career field. Let it go already. Many of us try and fail but we keep on going until we finally make it.

People should know what they are getting into. Others who are still trying to hold on to the profession should take an accounting once in a while of the continuing cost that the profession demands.

Aviation is not a religion. It is a job, and in that light it is difficult to justify.

You told me that I put to many "road blocks" in my way. I choose to earn a good living and to enjoy a good life at home with my family. Others here want the same.

The Dude,

You guys know a lot about me and like to take shots from behind your anonymity. Why don't you put your cards on the table? Tell me the wisdom behind sticking with a profession that treats its employees so poorly.

You mentioned that you have been laid off more than once. I have seen and flown with plenty of guys who have bounced from company to company. Each time they get laid off they keep coming back for more. And each time they loose a little more. Sometimes it is money. Other times it is a spouse.

As a regional and LCC guy I flew with plenty of hard luck pilots. The ones I have known are worn out, divorced and one paycheck away from destitution by middle age. It was nothing to envy. Are you really saying that it is a better life? I am here to learn and would really like to know.

So, what am I missing? Why should I sell myself to another no name company to someday make slightly more than a mailman as captain of a wide body? What is the future of an airline pilot today?

You are making my point for me. One out of ten chance. Who would take a risk like that? These days especially. Even the legacy airlines are not secure. Just where is a pilot supposed to safely invest themselves anymore?

UPS? SWA? Jetblue? Anyone of them, could be gone in ten years and then what are you left with? Roll the dice.

I do not believe in entitlements.

That being said, if there is a message you are trying to get out there, it should be - Never cheapen the profession.

Don't pay for a job, don't pay for training, do not accept substandard wages.

When we do these things, we detract from the very job we are trying to acquire.
