I know a lot of people who have turned to aviation after having failed at so many other endeavors. Do they really think this'll be any different? Is there some sort of a genetic predisposition towards failure? Why pick aviation of all things?

A week or so ago an old friend, music major in college, directionless employment history, former ATP student $50K in debt (at least), now FO at Scenic Air making $15K offered me assistance in getting on board with that company. It was everything I could do to not laugh in his face...

Maybe it's not the industry that's the problem. It's the people making bad decisions.

It's like going 4 years of college and majoring in music or philosophy because the chance to actually be able to apply their knowledge is slim. Or going in debt without a realistic plan of how to get of out it. The people that know they are going into debt for training, that may already be in debt, without a reasonable realization of what situation they will be in their first 2-3 years after training, and how tough things are going to be, are either stupid or just don't care. But if you are willing to live with the consequences of those decisions then what can be done. Again they can just come online and complain.

Work is work whether one is flying a plane or shoveling manure.

Your post is one of the most frightening things I have ever read on this forum.
Why is this frightening? Because I give a balance answer. No rose colored glasses but the sky is not falling. Your answers are of a person that is bitter. What is sad is you have a lot of experiece you could share but the only thing you want to share is your worse experiences.

I am glad it makes sense to you. Manure shovelers and pilots are similar except for one thing. The manure shoveler doesnt have to make an $800 payment at the end of the month for his training. I can't imagine what your plan is. Either you will go bankrupt in three years or have mom and dad bail you out. There is no point in reasoning with a delusional person.

If your comment was in reference to me. I can assure you that I am not bitter. My goal is to point out the folly of attempting this career with a huge debt burden.

Dear Redeye,

You do bring me such joy.. What a fine example of a super achiever American you must be !! You make us all proud. NASA should know that they are wasting an invaluable national resource by not drafting you into the space program.

Happy 4th !!!

Well...not exactly. I've done both; the latter while growing up on a small farm. ANY flying job is better than that!
High debt and low income plague small farmers too. Unless you inherit the place, startup costs are fantastic. Few young people are willing to do it any more.

I agree Mr. Goodman. Both are becoming difficult careers with shrinking returns.
