But wait...no ATP and no PIC turbine...Seems some of us SIC's, even those of us with over 3000 hrs tt may get left out in the cold.

If the so called pilot shortage actually hits, then I suppose we will find work to advance our careers, but numbers I'm seeing on mainline retirements are not exactly encouraging.

So us suckers that came in low-time that never got the ATP and the 1000 PIC flying boxes may very well have to face the music of our shortcut. We seem to be stuck in a wierd place of meeting the tt and multi mins of nearly everyone hiring but without the ATP and PIC time we are stuck. It's frustrating.

Sorry, I'm just venting...I'm sick of living paycheck to paycheck watching job after job come open that I don't qualify for as my SIC tt climbs into the 3500 hr range....

Sigh...I HATE that f'n ATP! It's hard to justify paying for it myself when getting any PIC turbine ain't gonna happen anyway...

Again..I'm just crying in my beer as Cathay Pac and JAL is hiring but me no have stoopid PIC time...Sorry.

I guess all I really can do is relax, be thankful I have a flying job at all and hope for the best....

Dude, there will be no pilot shortage in the next 10+ years. Make your current job better!

Default ATP and Type Rating

Dashgirl,

If you go to Compass, you will get the ATP, plus a PIC type rating in the ERJ170/190. That is worth quite a bit, even if you are still a Regional FO. With the flow throughs, upgrade is likely in 2 to 3 years, assuming that the current trends continue. If you don't have enough PIC for the ATP, go rent a 150 to get it so you can qualify for the ATP with Compass.

Good luck! I am addicted too!

i feel as though the writing has been on the wall at that place for a while, just curious why you didnt bail earlier to another regional. skywest and republic were hiring in droves back in 07.
I was very low time when I was hired, less than 600, I also had other "deficits" on my resume which meant I needed to get some significant tt to have those deficits overlooked in lieu of gained experiance by even another regional.

I can't get passed the wholly owned issue, and newly added to my knowledge on Compass, the AQP issue...and the pay for your training accommodations is insulting (this is the sort of thing pilots should never accept if we are to have any hope of making the job better for future generations. IMHO, I believe accepting training at a regional that won't pay for your hotel is no different then working for MAG, or Great lakes). I have all the ATP requirements and then some..got nearly 500 PIC. But I will not go backwards. I just don't see any advantage to Compass over my current situation. I can get an ATP over a weekend, but flying right seat does nothing for your logbook even with one. You don't log PIC time as an F/O even when your typed and ATP'd it's still SIC time. You might get a few hours on a ferry flight if your capt. is nice enough to let you log it but going to Compass is again, waiting on upgrade.) And you hit the nail on the head..."if the current trend continues"..Historically, in my life, I don't have good luck with lateral moves...

I did not know that...even more inexcusable IMHO than a regional pulling that BS.

im my opinion, they are all apples and oranges. Go to wherever u can upgrade fastest, stay curret, keep your nose clean. Dont bounce in between these regionals, and stay positive. There are jobs out there for whatever u want to fly. U mite have to go overseas, etc., but keep plugn away dashgirl.

I meant 170/190. Sorry

FWIW, I took a King Air gig to get TPIC instead of going to a regional. Also, AirTran doesn't (or didn't 2 years ago) pay for hotel if you live within 90 miles of the training facility.

Exactly. Stability is probably just as important as SIC time to some carrier's HR departments. That's it too, I'm old fellas. I ain't no 20 something spring chicken. I want a gig I can retire from...

When I was instructing I had a student that made his money elsewhere and was learning to fly for fun. He told me this; "keep your passions/hobbies separate from your job and you'll be happier"

Keep in mind, Piedmont was a "respectable regional" at one time. Whoever is on top now had the strong possibility of not being there forever.

Those word are a bit of a sad aspect of what this career had become. When you have "regional" CA's (for whatever reason) who are old enough to have children at ANOTHER "regional".

There hasn't been a pilotage shortage in the last 40+ years, and agree, there won't be one. EVER.

And know we open up the proverbial can of worms. It's a funny circle, when the hiring is going hot an heavy the bolded part is the mantra, because you won't be there for very long anyway so somehow it must be OK. However, when times are tough and nobody is hiring, regional pilots are expected to "hold the line" and "not sell out" to as to prevent the further decline of the profession.

Example, if one could get hired at GoJets and to a lesser extent, MESA, upgrade quick, and get out fast, does that mean that they should go there? You don't need to answer, it's a rhetorical question.
