I was in your same shoes... I had my choice between ExpressJet and Skywest, and I commute from California.
At the time, ExpressJet had just announced Ontario and LAX bases, which are both 1 hour from where I live... I chose ExpressJet, and ended up getting furloughed and now commute to ORD.
I don't regret coming to ExpressJet at all, but I will tell you that when I was LAX based, driving 1 hour to work, it was amazing. Unreal.
Yes, SKYW might close the base you choose to be in, but if it is a base that has been around awhile I would take the risk. Not having to commute would be pure gold.

We have a number of 5-9 yr FOs that are now taking the upgrade. The bottom half of the seniority list still have their bids in.

Ummm, my base was around awhile, over 35 years, and they closed it anyway! Seems odd and a waste of money, to pay for a lot of hotel rooms every night along with the per diem for crews, just to overnight them in what could have and should have continued to be a base...

I bet some bean counter crunched the numbers and decided they could save $1 by closing the base. They don't really care if they inconvenience employees

Except, if you do the math it actually costs the company tens of thousands more per month in extra hotel costs and per diem. It would seem they are saving hundreds, to spend extra thousands? Some sort of new special "bean counter" math that doesn't really add up!
