It's a stupid question because you can't assume anything. There is no average scenario. There's a best case scenario, there's a worst case scenario and 1,000 in between. At my last regional I would estimate 20% of captains were 50 or older! Sooo.... put that in your "average".

And "in this day and age" is NOT "in this day and age" five years from now, so no one can tell you an answer. I was hired and told that, "You'll upgrade in 2.5 years tops." Well it was six. While I would love to help you plan out your career and give you a better answer, all I can offer is advice: Find something else to do unless you have a four leaf clover birthmark.

How long is a regional pilots career?

You forgot the apostrophe.

To answer your question, nobody knows. Some move on within a year; others are still waiting after 2 decades. With the tremendous uncertainty in the future, go somewhere you can see yourself staying for at least 10 years. You just never know if you'll get stuck at your carrier- the last thing you want to do is go to someplace crappy, intending to use it as a stepping stone, and find yourself there many years later, wondering where you went wrong.

There is always an average... Lighten up Francis.

Just an observation but in the last small hiring wave, Captains were averaging 8 years. It seems guys itching to go now are 10 year Capt. Of course most Ca/Fo want to get on, but I predict the next wave will take the Capt's from 5-14 years on property.

I stand corrected. Yes, there is always an average, just not always a useful one.

An average of 8 years is really 56 years. Regional time is measured in dog years! :-)

#3... is not so far fetched I know lots of guys at AE and S5 who have been there 15-20 years because they like their situation..... fairly decent pay, most likely LIVE in base... probably to 5-8 % of the seniority list so they bid and get what they want to fly..ie.. good QOL.
Being hired at 50 yrs old is a good reason too. Regionals like guys around that age. They figure that they'll stick around for the long haul. Hell, at that age, one would only have 14-15 years on the flight deck anyways. It makes sense to stay put unless you got an inside track on things at say for instance Delta, UPSCO, or some really sweet corporate gig.

It's finding that sweet corporate gig (not on-call 24/7 and will be around for more than 3 years) which is the trick.

Are you:

Female? 3 years
Minority? 3 years
Both? 1 year!

None of the above? 20 to life.
