Dear United Mainline,

On behalf of all United Express crewmembers, some of which make only about $20k a year or less, please don't make us pay $40 for a round trip to commute to work.

At the very least please allow us to list for the jumpseat online. Many of your gate agents (not all but most) are very unhelpful and treat us like an inconvenience.

Thank you.
One of the pilots making about $20k a year.

TBucket 04-08-2013 11:47 AM

Wait, wha?

Or at the very LEAST, allow 1 city pair to be designated as a commute to work free segment. Just one pair. Why is that so hard for them to do?

Pilotguy143 04-08-2013 11:54 AM

wait, what changed?

Per segment?!?

beech1980 04-08-2013 12:04 PM

Why are people still willing to take a job that pays 20k a year? It makes no sense...

I got a belly full of white dog crap and now you lay this sh.t on me?

Milk Man 04-08-2013 12:20 PM

Hold on, so let me get this straight. When you list as non rev now, you have to pay $20 each segemnt? So you can avoid this by showing up an hour prior to list as jumpseat and get a seat in the back and not pay? But sometimes we can't be there an hour prior and we list early in the day or day prior and check ourselves in and now we have to pay? And sometimes yes gate agents aren't able to help us so we get left behind or we are forced to pay the $20. I get this right? Man just when you thought things couldn't get worse

Spoilers 04-08-2013 12:20 PM

HaHaHa! I don't care!

Sincerely,
Jeff Smisek

Nothing official yet from my company (ASA/XJT). Until I see an official memo, this is just a rumor. Then it's war.

Tony, there is no more ASA, its just Expressjet :)

I'm just busting your balls, its disgraceful if they do this to people trying to get to work to fly UNITED passengers.........

flygirl556 04-08-2013 12:37 PM

This is gonna really suck for flight attendants who can't always jumpseat and make even less than most pilots. At what point is the job not even worth it anymore for someone who doesn't make a whole lot to begin with but now has to pay to go to work? I wonder if UAX carriers may have a harder time finding flight attendants and FOs when the exodus starts. I guess this might be one way to take care of scope issues-UAX carriers can't staff properly because the job is slowly becoming not worth it for some folks. It sucks for pilots but we'll deal with it for career progression but we'll still need flight attendants for airplanes to go places. It sucks that now we get to pay a segment fee for practically no priority.

Saabs 04-08-2013 12:42 PM

That's how it used to be at CJC. We paid per segment. Then they brought us up to the other regionals benefits where we didn't have to. Hopefully it's not like eagle where u list for jump and if u get a seat in the back u get charged.

If you didn't want to have pass benefits that suck, you shouldn't work for a company that sucks.

I know guys making 6 figures flying a Beech all over the world, not just slinging gear pushing buttons.

FlyJSH 04-08-2013 01:02 PM

Does this only apply to United express carriers, or all regionals, or all non United carriers?

Arent you at psa? Hate to break it to ya, but we suck too. Our travel benefits are the only good thing. Free, same priority as mainline, and priority on mainline jumpseat along with PDT. If we get hired at mainline, we keep our origional doh for non rev travel. Im hoping this doesnt change after the merger. How does amr charge for non rev?

And apparently willing to pay $40 to commute back and forth to work. Hence the reason there will never be a pilot shortage.

NoLightOff 04-08-2013 01:08 PM

This really isn't about how little we make. Feel free to start a thread about that with all your career advice and ways to not make so little starting out in this career. I agree that we are very underpaid. I can't just not go to work and its illegal for me to suggest that we all don't go to work next month until we get paid more but I am open to ideas.

By the segment as well. It's anywhere from 10-20 bucks/segment coach (add a few bucks for first). After 5 years, domestic coach is free. Less than 5 years it's only free if you are forced on the jumpseat - you cannot "ask" for the jumpseat to not get charged. Boarding is by checkin time and all AMR employees (AA and "L-Eagle") are the same priority. All other "Eagles/Connection" board a lower priority.

Its not funny. Comments like this are why the guy flying the beech and working his but off!, are getting paid so little. Respect each other, respect the job, demand more!

Good Rate 04-08-2013 01:50 PM

If this happens, it will mean $80+ a month for me to get to work. Do you know how easy it is for me to burn 10x that in fuel burns. Not to mention mtc write ups. They may take money out of my check, but they won't make any money on me.

And...I will not wrongfully deny a united pilot a jump seat, but there will be no more "making it work" to get one on. If the numbers don't work, they just don't work. No favors...unless you got $20 in your hand.

astec 04-08-2013 01:58 PM

Welcome to the dark side .. We've been playing this game at eagle for years

LOL, I was thinking the same thing.

Nolightoff,, Just hush up and pay your dues "little man". It'll all come in time. I made 20k a year for years at the regionals. Unless your coming from the military(never held a job),, born with a silver spoon crammed in your ***,, your going to have to pay your dues 2x. Just the way it is. Be happy and really enjoy the ride.

MrBigAir 04-08-2013 02:27 PM

From what I understand, it's $20 PER LEG if it's not on your own Metal. Mainline guys commuting on Express carriers will have to pony up $20 bucks too. If you can commute on your own metal, you're good.

This is how it was explained to me.

Absolutely mind boggling.

If this is true Smisek will be in for a rude awakening if he tries to make UAL mainline pilots and FAs pay to get to work......

This is wrong. ALWAYS help out a commuting pilot. Grow up.

^ This. The united pilots didn't do this, the management did. Don't keep a fellow commuter from getting to work. There have already been other, better ways suggested to "protest" this money grab at your expense.

Tell me why anybody would want to go work for the abortion called UAL?

Well said. Jumpseat wars don't help anybody.
