Oh My
No sacrafices here. I think the big problem with pilots as they all know where they want to go and will do anything to get there as fast as possible. I'm taking my time and being an instructor and I'm making a good living and enjoying it. I'm only 24 and application is in at the regionals. Can't argue with that. I didn't sell my soul to get there and I've enjoyed it. I REFUSE to fly for free for someone. If you want instruction you're getting charged. I didn't go through college to sell myself short here so that I could hopefully work somewhere better later on. The journey is half the battle.
In my opinion the first years working for a regional might as well be for free.

Those MAG guys / gals are the ones getting to the majors faster with more TPIC time and the reputation of a sh!tty company behind them (literraly behind them, pounding away!!!).
Nevermind a second year jet FO will make $10,000-$12,000 LESS (which is like 30% less) then they would make at a good regional doing the same job (or less). No wonder they expanded so much, so fast .

Sweet, you sound like MAG material!

I don't need to go thru MAG or ATP. I will make the decision to go thru ATP so I can get to working as a commercial pilot faster and without spending time sitting around a FBO trying to log ME time. MAG is out of the question. I'll be in the position to wait and work at the regional of my choice. I don't plan on living / working in a depressed area of the country. I also have the financial backing of a spouse that makes much more than I could hope to in aviation.
Sincerely,
LAFF

That's great man. Just don't p|ss and moan when a future company of yours gets underbid and you lose your job. Although it sounds like you are doing this more as a hobby than as a job. I think that's swell.

You are correct. Aviation will be a second career - mostly to pass the time since I'm not a country club member / dinner w/ friends / fisherman / golfer / or lawn mower type of guy.
I'd rather be outside working then at home enjoying retirement.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not crossing any lines or working for places like GoJets.

I don't think there's anything really wrong with ATP. They don't seem to rip off their students too badly, which is about the best you hope for in flight training. Also the ME thing can significant. I know a few 2000+ hour CFI's with about 11 hours of twin time...
Their pay scale for CFI's sounds kind of flaky if it's really a flat $1200/month. I got paid a flat base salary, and then on top of that a pretty good hourly rate for ground/sim/flight. Of course if you only have to do it for 8 months...
