Thanks to those who mentioned that some states have banned employer credit checks I found my answer with a search: (This is from 2012)
"The total number of states that limit employers' use of credit information in employment is now eight: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Oregon, Vermont and Washington."
Thanks to everyone who made the effort to reply to answer my question.
To those of you who don't know me or my situation, yet felt justified to slander my character...
I hope that I can be like you someday when I decide to grow up and become a responsible member of society.
Once I reach your level, I will erect a throne worthy of royalty, clad in gold. Sitting on this throne while viewing myself in a large mirror, I will worship myself as a god of morality and responsibility while spitting on the lowly irresponsible serfs below who have foolishly committed to a debt in good faith in order to improve their lot in life by getting training for a career- and then fell on tough times.
"You stupid serfs!
Know your place!
Now bring me more grapes!
You leeches on society! Look at me! You are nothing!"

What about the guy who as a result of the economic downturn gets laid off? This is life, stuff happens. I'm not talking about those who act financially irresponsibly, but those who get the short end of the stick in these difficult times. Let's not be too quick to judge.

Again, another thread providing food for thought, and a dose of reality counter to the flight schools' glossy literature.
Be very careful financially with your educational costs, flying or not. The best man from my own wedding has north of 60k in debt from an art degree, and hasn't even graduated yet (in other words he hasn't started repayment yet.). I'm scared for what will happen when the loan payments come due. Without caution, loans can allow for instant gratification, but with a big consequences right around the corner.
Maybe the mods can "sticky" links to threads like these under "Flight Schools and Training.". This type of thread comes up fairly often.
Stratmatt, if you could go back and do things differently, what would you do? This could be very instructive to all the folks considering or are in the middle of flight training.

I think we need a modern version of a debtor's prison for regional pilots who can't/won't repay their loans. I think the government should make those pilots stay at the regionals and repay their loans, or have them garnished.
I'm all for the majors checking credit history and I wouldn't hire someone with a bad credit report. It shows them to be irresponsible, and I don't want someone like that pulling the gear for me.

Worst safety record in 121. Sure, high pay, but high rates of pilot deviations to pay off.

True. Though Delta refused to pay Pinnacle. Guess who suffered from that. Sure as heck not the company who decided not to pay for "services rendered".

Up until now, I would have sided with those that said you should have paid off your loan. After being far too close to the proceedings that ended my last airline, I'd say screw it.

No, not recently and we fly in a much higher threat environment than you regional guys do. Would love to see how quick it would take YOU to ball up an MD-11 in a strong crosswind.
