If the aviation business has taught ANY lessons...it should be that people should not set expectations based on "forecasts", lest those expectations go unmet.

And once again...shortage of pilots willing to work for US regional airline compensation does not equal scarcity of pilots in the US.

There are about 400-500 Eagle lifers as well.

I think the regionals have the future mainline staffing covered. Oh yeah, don't forget about the military pilots and all of the american pilots overseas that gave up on a good flying job in the U.S.might want to come back as well. Looks like the only pilot shortage is going to be for low paying regional jobs. This also assumes ZERO flight training. I think flight training might produce a few more pilots than ZERO over the next six years as well.
I don't totally buy into the Cliffs pilot shortage mantra ... .BUT ... I would be you that 25-30% of those guys at regionals... DONT want to leave or CANT leave for various reasons.... its probably even a HIGHER number than that at the ACMI that I work for.....

The shortage is totally a pay thing. People who have the flight times the regionals need are either not applying, or left the regionals for better work (myself included, former Colganite here). I think what we are going to see happening is regional routes getting severely reduced until Mainline eventually takes back all the flying. I think we will see ERJ175 or CRG700/900's that are wholly mainline owned flying whatever remaining routes that used to be regional flying and that will be the end of it. It will stifle the pilot shortage (if there is one) for sure.

Default Yawn...

They're just trying to bait another generation of suckers to the mudpit. The agenda at every stage in the game rides on the backs of trainees, and cheap regional lift.

UND / Riddle: big pilot shortage on the way, get ready, get yiur check books.

Regionals : work here for peanuts, it's your ticket to the big show!

Majors : man those regionals are cheap, do whatever you can to keep them around.

Don't forget all of the charter pilots like myself waiting on the sidelines seeing how all this will play out. I would need about $50 an hour to go work for a regional, until that day comes fugetaboutit.

AND, the above figures are only for the US....foreign carriers have way higher pilot needs, and they will be recruiting more and more aggressively in the US, hence worsening the shortage in the US.

I think major airlines need to get off their butts:
1- They could finance loans to new pilots
2- They could hire pilots in high school and pay for their training, just like UAL did in the 1960s.

They need to do something, and fast. It doesn't seem like the pilot shortage is that bad right now, but it's just the tsunami wave retreating from the beach...pretty soon everyone will see how bad it is, and it will be getting progressively worse, probably monthly. I don't see the end of it...
They are not going to adjust. This is a main reasons profits are going up (not enough pilots to fly the number of people who want to fly). The result is that only those who pay more of a premium get to travel by air. The airlines are going to make a lot of money over the next 20 years with this built in (price fixing) supply shortage.

Unfortunately, they have a lot of reasons not to raise wages at regional levels and I believe a pilot shortage is one of them.

So then how do you explain these concessionary contracts?
The only shortage I see is a shortage of money going to pilots, especially the guy in the right seat!

I think that, in many instances, management thinks they are smarter than pilots. Also, within the context of their current contracts with the majors, they might need concessions especially if your pilot group is aging. The majors won't give them more money until their equipment starts running half empty because the feed is broken.

Management writes them - the unions sign off on them - the pilots ratify them.

You know who I hold responsible but I guess all 3 are to blame.
