And I also say the Delta guy is a tool.
I hope we see this in the sim next year and get a good brief on what occured.

It doesn’t. That’s why I originally asked. It’ll be interesting to see what their actions were immediately after realizing the runaway.
Any chance this was a software issue with the FCM? I haven’t seen that possibility brought up. Would make sense why they were in Direct mode.

But based on the audio it sounds as if they DIDN’T run the QRH. One of the crew members says something along the lines of “honestly we didn’t have time” and “we’re in Direct mode.”
Nowhere in the Pitch Trim Runaway QRH checklist does it have you putting the Flight Control Mode into Direct. So why were they in Direct mode?
I’m not criticizing; it’s a fair question. Was it a last ditch effort or were they just pushing buttons?
Great job, nonetheless!

I agree but would I also wouldn’t broadcast anything I’ve done or haven’t done unnecessarily on recorded frequencies. The crew got it on the ground safely after a clearly harrowing experience. I say well done.

Emergency Authority - good call. And I never meant any criticism of the job done - results matter.

Everyone has their own opinions...but..
For me if I were in that situation (and I’m sure 99% of you) it would be an oh ***** moment. Crew didn’t bend metal and made it on the ground safe with their lives in tact so major success in my book.
As for the delta guy, I don’t think he did anything wrong. Give the guy a break. He was trying to help in an obviously crappy situation. I mean they couldn’t control the plane...
Rant over just my 2 cents.

I'll never understand the immense criticism some pilots have for other pilots trying to keep things safe. A simple reminder to run the QRH after an extremely stressful scenario from someone that likely has thousands of hours on the type or the several threads chastising the audacity of a jumpseater to speak up when pilots are doing something dumb. Safety first and foremost, kudos to all involved. Look forward to the lessons learned we can all take from this flight.

(All speculation)
I heard from another in the passing that they might have pulled the elevator disconnect handle. For the jammed control column pitch QRC. If this is the case it would have put them in direct mode. This would also eliminate AOA protection, and possibly reduced elevator authority to decrease pitch. Hence why they had a difficult time pitching down.
Possibly, when the captain mentioned it being "sourced" to the right side might have meant the FO side had the free control column for pitch.
Although unlikely, it is entirely possible that there was more to this than just a pitch trim runaway. Perhaps a jammed control on top of it. Whatever the case, we have to wait for our company to fill us in. And in the mean time, well done to the crew for handling the situation and getting back on the ground. That is the ultimate goal, and all that matters at the end of the day.

You see, this assumption that the PIC in that airplane didn’t have thousands of hours “on the type” is where you’re all rubbing people the wrong way. It’s the blanket characterization that regional folks have less experience or are lesser pilots or haven’t seen as much or don’t care as much or... you get my drift.
I understand that it wasn’t meant that way, but that’s often the way it is received.
