Interesting posts. But we are dancing around the real issue.

Instead of finger-pointing, maybe all us pilots should get together and state the obvious:

Chicago Midway is an unsafe airport for large transport category aircraft.
It is a major disaster waiting to happen.
It should be left to the Cessnas or closed.

Don't know anyone that was EVER trained to land at a walking pace....and told me about it.

Most refer to that as a stall.

JMHO I don't think that it is unsafe but maybe this accident will make some changes in the runway assignments. I landed at MDW a couple of hours before this and we landed on 22L because the winds were 200/20G27. This crew landed on 13C. I don't know what the winds were when they landed, but I wonder if O'Hare switched runways and they had the flow at MDW switch to 13C. Or maybe the ceiling dropped below circle minimums for 22L.

Or, perhaps, suggest that the runways be lengthened by about 1000'. That's really about all we need. You'd just need to demolish about a quarter square mile of South Chicago low-income housing to make it happen.

Chicago politicians would get right behind a bunch of rich old white guys calling for poor black folks housing to be bulldozed...right?

Ooh ooh ooh. I have a better idea. Close Midway and build a replacement airport out on Northerly Island!

If left to Cessna's the place willl be bulldozed and turned into another Mayor Daley park.

I know it is a postage stamp of an airport and after years of flying in there with poor and snowy weather I think it's fair to say that with a couple of enhancements it'd be perfectly safe. Such as a tail hook and steam catapult.

The interesting PA dance is when it's a company airplane sitting there in a precarious situation, such as...

Anyone that flies into Midway very often and thinks something like this couldn't happen to them needs to think long and hard. Glad no one was hurt today.

Agree, when a plane runs off for whatever reason and nobody is hurt, it's something to be thankful about.

If that's your opinion of MDW, how do you feel about John Wayne (SNA)? Shorter runways with 2 major freeways on each side. However, it doesn't have the same crazy weather MDW has. Still an aircraft carrier landing for some.
