No injuries reported and we'll all learn later what happened and see if it teaches us something new or helps us be better pilots, till then, no injuries is a great thing.

Sun-Times Media Wire

Chicago - No one was injured Tuesday afternoon when an incoming Southwest Airlines jet slid off a runway at Midway Airport and got stuck in the mud.

The Southwest flight, which originated in Denver with 140 people aboard, slid off a runway and got stuck in the mud while landing at Midway, police News Affairs Officer Michael Fitzpatrick said.

The Chicago Fire Department was notified at 1:35 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado.

As of about 1:50 p.m. Fire Department personnel were on the scene. Rosado said no injuries were reported and no one was being taken to hospitals.

The city Dept. of Aviation did not immediately return calls for comment.

Looks like they chose to take it into the grass and mud rather than use the EMAS.

Landed RWY 13C apparently. Tough conditions for anyone with a gusty crosswind and short rain slickened runway. Still trying to figure out how they missed the EMAS setup at the end of the runway.

Probably a good idea since it costs big $$$ to replace EMAS.

Might have tried to make the turnoff onto the taxiway to buy a little pavement, but with it being slick just couldn't make it

Cost is the least of my worries if I'm flying off the end of the runway....especially if a busy Cicero Avenue is mere feet away from the end. Better for everyone on the plane and the street traffic if I hit the EMAS which is designed to stop me a lot better than the grass. Let's face it, ending up in the mud or the EMAS are both bad choices, but the EMAS is better for everyone.

Strictly guessing here, he probably hoped he could make the high speed turn onto 'E' which has a wide run-up area and just didn't negotiate the turn.
