Are there generally a set amount of each position available to new hires? For example, if there are 30 in a class do they open up exactly 30 options to chose from, or could everyone, in theory, select NYC 737? I’ve got a terribly low last 4 of the SS# and am trying to get an idea of what to expect. Pardon the ignorance…

They offer the exact number of openings as there are people in class (not counting last minute no-shows). So a class of 30 will have 30 options to bid on. This thread is where each drop will show up once it’s made available. Basically for the last few months every drop has been NYC 737, 757, A320, and A220, with some ATL or DTW 717. A few have also had ATL 737. I wouldn’t hold out hope for very many postings (if any) in other bases. And pretty much zero chance of anyone with a low SSN landing a spot if it’s offered.

Go look as posts 890 and 913 to see how recent drops have looked.

Quote: While any unbid position in any base is available “for” new hires, the company can pick what to offer “to” new hires. Each class has a specific set of options that the company posts for them to bid on. Traditionally NYC is the least desirable base and also the hardest to staff, so they constantly need to throw as many new bodies in there as they can. They know that almost every new hire put there is going to bid to other bases as soon as they’re able, which continues the vicious NYC staffing cycle.

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you. This info makes me feel better about my future as a Los Angeles resident.

the biggest thing you have to worry about is listening to your coworkers complain about your home for decades ahead

Haha. Yea probably true. Is LAX a triple domicile with SNA and ONT like how NYC is?

Quad....LAX/SNA/BUR/ONT

Not sure why they aren't loading some new hires into LAX ER, had over 40 unbid spots so I held out some hope it was coming but appears it's just NYC forever and some random sprinkles of domestic fleets getting other bases.

Oh well. GS'S are flying like crazy out here so I'll take advantage of it. How exciting 81 ALV next month... Lol....

is that on there too? Maybe I haven't noticed. I bid avoid them all besides LAX, granted only one I think ER really is in is LAX/SNA. Not sure how much 737/320 is at the other spots

It’s a set number as explained above, but you don’t know (nor will they tell you) how many they will offer. For example:

30 people in class…options sent in email are:

NYC7ER
NYC320
NYC220
NYC7NG
ATL717
DTW717

They won’t tell you how many they will assign, nor do they know until they get everyone’s preferences.

From what I’ve been told, they try and match you as best they can based on sim availability, but for instance if a whole bunch of guys have the 220 listed high, maybe they give out a couple more 220s than they originally planned.

The only people who got 220s in one of the classes I had a friend in recently were those who listed it 1 or 2. Doesn’t mean that’s every class.

BL, they leave about as much wiggle room as they can for themselves. And no one knows exactly what they will do, so don’t try and game the system. Put down what you want in the order you want them.

Trips haven’t originated there since the 717 days, but officially it’s there
