As I said, many other pilots were contacted and they confirmed similar experiences. Frankly, his case was well-known within the fleet, including among management, but he had his lawyer on speed-dial and he cowed the company into overlooking the issue. So beyond using Pro Standards to unwind the pairing each and evert time it came up, yes, there are no other options short of encouraging the company to pursue a mandatory retirement policy.

Thankfully, in this case at least, kharma had the last laugh and he lost his medical for an unrelated issue.

You filed a written report to management? To the FAA? To ASAP? Was it his age that was the issue or that he was unsafe?

Would you consider falling asleep at TOD unsafe? How about at the hold short line? Cruise? Climb? He did all the above and more. There are literally dozens of pictures floating around out there. The fact that he is WELL over 70 only reinforces the fact that we need a mandatory retirement age to capture the outliers.

So is it the age? If so, nothing short of legislation will get you what you want.

If it is a safety issue, have you exhausted all your resources?

Nah, just trying to get him to reflect a bit. Many people just don't recognize their real issue or do but don't have the gumption to do what they know should be done. I certainly understand the frustration.

The real issue is we had a narcoleptic fossil flying our airplanes, I witnessed it first hand, I confronted him directly, I witnessed it again, and I recommended him to the program that exists to deal with such issues, and it was whitewashed. That’s it.

Do you realize how few people around here have the “gumption” to submit another pilot to the FDAC program?

I hit a nerve with you here; I didn't really mean to. I probably shouldn't have replied anything at all because it really deserves a long form discussion over a beer in CMH sometime. If I see you there, the beer is on me, and maybe I can explain without being, pedantic.
