Sure, some people were like that, but honestly, it's a lot easier for FOs, especially junior FOs, to move on. For the captains, it's a lot harder to give up their paychecks and take a leap of faith until they have to.
Of course, a lot of captains are now junior to those FOs.
There are places to go, but how much better they are really depends. Take ASA/XJT. Both are quality airlines, but man, I wouldn't want to be near the bottom of that list.
I was surprised how long it took to leave. I was hired by Compass a few weeks after the initial announcement, but I decided that wasn't the right move for me. It took more than a year to find something that was a step up more than a step back.
It's bad enough being stuck at Comair with no future, so I'm glad more guys can keep the paychecks coming while they look for something better.
