Kind of an off topic question. I doubt I am going to get anything awarded on this AE, most likely displaced if anything. But after I enter my AE preferences, it asks if I would like to retain my vacation or something along those lines. Also mentions something about pay protection.
What does this mean? Does it mean that if I choose to retain my vacation, I will NOT receive the award even though my seniority can hold it?
Or does it mean that someone junior to me may go to training before me?

I looked at the contract and couldn't find the information anywhere. Thanks for any info!
Welcome and careful, you may get sucked in

The part I bolded is correct.

You will have to rebid vacation if you are awarded a new position via AE or VD, not so with MD (ie involuntary displacement will allow you to retain your previously awarded vacation.)

I believe the screen you're talking about is referring to vacation that may conflict with training when they get around to scheduling you for qual training in your new position. If you choose to keep your current vacation, then you will not be pay protected. If you would rather keep your vacation (that conflicts with training) then you will go to training whenever they can schedule you for it - after you vacation is over.

Now I think this only applies if it conflicts with your training. Say you have Christmas vacation and they want you to go to class in September. I don't think you can say "nahh, I'd rather wait til next year"

I always hold the coveted mid-March vacation, so I never worry about them moving it. Figure it can't get much less desirable
Quote: On icrew, Schedules, PCS, leave request, move reserve off days. I think it runs about 6 times a day, I would have to look to be sure. If you are looking to move a golden day you lose it. It has to meet all the Min and Max days on or off for your cat., and it won't let you work more the 6 days in a row.
Found it. Thx.

I think its too late to reverse course for this contract.
The die is cast.
Moak's "constructive engagement" will either succeed or it will fail.

So far, it doesn't look good. I was hopeful that our new relationship with management would have led to some contractual adjustments after we cleared bankruptcy and started making profits again. That it would be more of a continuous process rather than a huge all or nothing deal at the amendable date. Now it appears we are going to DEC 2012 and probably beyond working under this same awful contract.
The "Recovery Compact" was a one way street.

The point would be cost savings. You can replace every paper document in the cockpit except navigation pubs. Take a look at how many books that is on a 767. You also get to fire all the people responsible for maintaining those books and you get the weight reduction from taking them off the aircraft.

What Delta however wants is a lot more functionality then the Ipad can provide. They want it to interface with both dispatch, crew scheduling, maintenance and the aircraft. That kind of capability is months if not weeks away. USAIR is installing a product that looks much like a Ipad that Boeing markets that can do much of what I mentioned.

Again the Ipad has not been approved for use below 10,000 feet for any part 121 airlines. Most of the stuff quoted here concern part 91 or 135 operations. The better written articles about Alaska mentioned that shortcoming and that they will still carry paper Nav pubs. Delta may yet buy the Ipad as interim deice because it will reduce weight on the aircraft and let them lay off a large number of employees. If I worked in aircraft publications for Delta I would be very concerned about the future of my job.
Quote: You will be awarded a AE regardless of which vacation option you choose. If you opt to keep existing vacations the company can train you out of contractual order to preserve your vacation and would not be required to pay protect you at a higher paying rate until you actually convert on that aircraft.
Perfect. Kind of what I figured. Thank you for the info!

Thanks for the warning And thank you for the quick response. The clarification is much appreciated.

Well rumors are that the 3rd generation Ipads will come equipped with a program that is hardwired to communicate with a special satellite that can scratch your arse from outer space.

The version rumored for DALPA to be issued would actually have a function to "kiss Mgmt's arse" from outer space. Much more complicated of a programming line than the regular line pilots. (Hence the delay.)

I'm sure both of them are too numb to care.
It's Friday Friday getting down on Friday... you know what day it is? fRIDAY!

Time for random sex, gossip and controversy as it relates to our jobs. First, a man that was admittedly "flying":
