But generally speaking, I agree with you.
You can either pay by the hour as you go or prepay the flat rate of half your stuff every 10 years. Depends on how much you use it I guess. Residuals and depreciation and all that numbers stuff.

Is this doable, and if so, how? Would he have dropped all of his normal trips and picked up others at 150% pay?

I ask because, at Delta, a lineholder must fly almost a full month at normal pay before he can get 200% for a premium pay trip.

Right. At $38K per month, I'm thinking he's at about 170 hours (converted from TFPs) per month. A regular lineholder at Delta could possibly do that, but the cards would all have to fall into place. A reserve lineholder could also do it, but only if there are enough GSs to go around and around all month long.

I do understand that SWA does not have the 1 GS rule as Delta does. IOW, a senior pilot can fly all the premium pay trips he wants without regard to more junior pilots. One would have think that this too keeps the average SWA pilot from doing what this jumpseater does.

SWA guys, please add to this discussion to clear up any misconceptions. Thanks...

He or she can drop all their trips and pick up at premium if they want. Two things have to happen though. You're senior enough where people want to pick up your trips ie turns, commutable trips, low block high pay, playboy mansion ovrrnights, etc, and lots of open time in the system ie summer flying.

Thanks, Herk. Was I wrong in thinking that he can only drop so far before his schedule is frozen until he picks up some more flying?
