3 years wont get you crap in SLC!! LOL. 15 years reserve captains in SLC.. there are only 41 FO bids in for DFW as there 1st or 2nd choice... after around 30 your hitting the 4100 mark out of 4500 pilots. It will go to Newhires by fall. (If you don’t believe me look back at my track record on these topics)

Yeah, I get the sense that DFW will be easier to hold as an FO on the CRJ than IAH after training. When will we know how senior DFW will be on both the FO and CA sides?

I've been using GI Bill for all of my training so far, and will just need the remainder of my airplane PIC time soon. Envoy would require me to wait until I'm on terminal leave to move down to Coast and time build with another student and pays them directly. SkyWest starts a paycheck at ATP-CTP where as Envoy doesn't until Indoc. Envoy will probably have me on reserve for a significant amount of time until I can actually hold a line at DFW, and as soon as I upgrade I'll be booted back to LGA/ORD. Envoy had a huge spike of hiring, and is now slowing their pace for FOs which means seniority is going to be a little more stagnant and make getting a line back at DFW even longer. SkyWest sounds like if I go CRJ for DFW or commute to IAH from DFW I'll have a good chance of flying a fair share off the bat.

We're buying a house in the DFW area in the next few months, and I plan on spending my foreseeable future there. Goal is to have as seamless as a transition from paycheck to paycheck, and from what I'm gathering SkyWest is my best bet for that. Would CRJ right now guarantee me getting at least IAH after training? How long would DFW take realistically if I would be starting the pipeline w/ATP-CTP in 3-4 months? Is DFW going anywhere any time soon? I read 4 years, but how likely is that to change? Also feel free to destroy my hopes and dreams. I'm used to it.
DFW opens in September with a 4 year aircraft deal with American. Whether or not it gets extended is anyones guess, but Skywest has been very good at securing contracts and flying. IAH use to have about 120 crews per seat but is down to about 30 now. It was about to close, but I think United asked us to keep it open. With 20 aircraft in DFW, I would guess its going to grow to about the 100-120 mark of crews. Skywest opens and closes bases like crazy. They grow and shrink too as you can see with IAH.

Envoy and AA are rock solid in DFW, as they are obviously both headquartered there and unless someone major happens, AA probably isn't going anywhere. Envoy has a flow to AA, so you could potentially spend your entire career driving to work, which is huge if you plan on staying in the area. So don't forgot to think about the long term effects instead of just the short term of transition for you. Reserve to being a line holder and upgrading are always a moving targets, so if you're driving to work it won't matter as much.

I'm at SkyWest now, and being from the DFW area, I do sometimes wish Envoy had hired me. I've enjoyed SkyWest too, but you can see some of the growing pains we are having here too. Just food for thought in making your decision!

Envoy’s contract allows for forced upgrades to undesirable bases. Even if someone ended up in DFW as an FO, they would be force upgraded to LGA or ORD on the 145 once they hit captain minimums (1,000 hours 121 and 2,500 total). Presently, once you flow to American, if you want DFW, you are flowing into the MD80.

However, giving up the signing bonus and increased pay might not make sense if DFW is where one eventually wants to permanently land. On the other hand, SWA’s DAL base is junior and SWA loves SKW pilots. That probably works just as well for a pilot in the Dallas area and the pilot ends up going to a company that treats their pilots much better than AA.

Even more routes popping up on the AA "Where we fly" page.

DFW-LRD starts Sept 5. 2x a day except Saturday.
DFW-ROW is back Sept 5. 2x a day.
DFW-SAF is back August 20. Becomes 3x a day Sept 5.
DFW-TYS picks up considerably in Sept as well.

Early August when first bids come out will give us an rough idea, but that's for only 29 slots a seat. We're talking about 20 airplanes eventually. Doesn't mean much until all the airplanes are set up and on property. Sounds like we can expect about 100-110 a seat. We will have a better understanding how the seniority will play out in winter I would guess once things get rolling and the more senior people see how the trips turn out.

If anyone is curious the nonrev listing website for AA shows us starting DFW-SBN-CLT January 6, 2019 twice a day. I anticipate that run to get transferred over to us sooner though.

DFW - Panama City, Florida starts in January.

DFW - Sarasota, Florida starts in December.

Thanks for the input from everyone regarding my situation (useful or not). Do you think all the majors would take all regional flying to their own WOs if they could support it? Specifically AA and ENY/PSA/PDT? SkyWest is in Dallas now taking over ExpressJet flying for AA correct? If the WOs are able to grow and take over that flying does that not bode well for SkyWest in DFW?

There is a 4 year contract in place with AA. It isn’t going anywhere quickly. I am a bit disappointed DFW/DAL isn’t becoming a base for both the CRJ/175.

My neighbor works in the offices at AA and works on the regional contracts. He says sure, they would love to bring all regional flying in-house but it isn’t going to happen. ENV is struggling to staff LGA even with a street captain gig, a flow, and $45,000 check on day 1 of Indoc.

That’s cause no one wants to fly the 145 out of LGA on never ending reserve.
