Not the company saying it, it's the FAA. There are multiple letters of interpretation from the FAA over several years saying they have a "one phone call policy" during a rest period that is completely up to the airman if he/she answers.

This policy is common at many airlines (including mainline) and has been vetted by ALPA:

Q-73. Can the certicate holder make one phone call to a flightcrew member without interrupting his/her rest?

A-73. The FAA has a “one phone call” policy that “generally” allows a certi cate holder to initiate one phone call during a crewmember’s rest period. If the crewmember voluntarily chooses to answer the phone call, the FAA does not view the phone call as disruptive and breaking the rest period. However, if the phone is not answered and multiple calls are made in a empt to get the phone answered or the ightcrew member cannot return to sleep after answering the phone call, then the sleep opportunity may have been interrupted in that circumstance. Thus, a certi cate holder runs the risk of interrupting a ightcrew member’s sleep opportunity during the rest period by making a phone call.
You always have the option of making a fatigue call if you are unfit for duty as a result of a rest interruption, but making a blanket claim that one call = rest period reset will not hold water with either the FAA or your union/pilot association.

Dont want to be contacted? Give your CP a "Do Not Call" written notice. After that ANY attempt to call is a rest interruption.

FARs allow one call, which makes sense. Company may want to tell u flight is delayed, sleep in two more hours, etc.

You are also allowed to unplug/turn off phone and not take calls till rest ends.

I love our airline policy...they call and wake us up when it is time....they miss the call...not your problem. Plane delayed, you keep sleeping. They set up transportation to the aircraft.

But, they don't call you if you are DH as airline passenger...you have to set your own wake up and set up your transportation to airport....they pay for transport.

I thought the hard "one phone call" rule went buh-bye in 117. As least as far as regulation is concerned, it's basically up to the pilot to determine if any contact by the company (as well as hotel room/transportation/exc.) interrupted or did not allow for an 8 hour sleep opportunity.

Anyone on the call earlier today that can confirm what the response from SAPA was to extra flying? I heard that we were basically told that all the extra flying we are picking up from airlines that can't staff it is just getting built into the bids at the last minute and not being offered as open time. So basically the MRS that was supposed to start in Jan is worthless because it only applies to Open Time. Since our PBS globalizes and doesn't leave OT, our bids for January will again ignore seniority and just assign all the extra flying to our line holders with no extra incentive. Looks like we got another one pulled on us during our "negotiations". Does SAPA realize what this is doing to all of us or care?? I wasn't able to make the call but was hoping this was going to be talked about.
