Heard it from ALPA my contact at ALPA national. If you think about it, why would the majors want to keep the most senior(expensive) guys on the payroll? It's about training events, they can't train all the new hires and retirement bid shufflers at the same time. The perfect storm has arrived, and there ain't no way they can fix it, no matter how bad they want to. Sims and facilities are expensive, way more expensive, cash and time wise.
And yes, they are raising the retirement age but not in one big bounce like last time 60 to 65. It will be slowly raised from 65 to 75 over a 10 year period so nobody needs to complain.

Now, for becoming a Designated Examiner they want a lot more experience, we're talking at least 2 weeks.
Take my word for it.
