Why are you wasting your personal time? If it's giving your problems don't worry about it until you report for duty.

Also, if you mess with the stupid EFB within ten hours of show time...

1) Your duty time starts when you start messing with it.
2) You might not even have the legal ten hours rest depending on your schedule.
3) You left a digital paper trail of doing company business during rest period.

Everybody, company included, kind of glosses over this issue, but it's very real and is going to bite people in the butt eventually. You know the FAR 117 warning on all the quarterly trainings? Same principle.

Dangerous logic as you could extend that to other things.
You want to get paid for a deadhead? You want to get paid for a holiday at home?

Min guarantee is just that. The Company (Pbs) had its chance to get this line holder a line. It failed and he gets his guarantee and he gets his vacation.

Deadheads you should be paid for, you're available and you're working, the company needs you just like they need you when you're on reserve. As for holiday pay without working, I've never understood that since the holiday pay is suppose to be a incentive not to call in, I'm not complaining, but from a business stand point it doesn't make sense.

You can (should) also call the after hours support line. I had to do that once. Pretty sure you're supposed to call if your issue is going to cause the cancellation or delay of a flight.

Is this a Skywest thing? 117 doesn't say if you update an EFB off duty that it interferes with your rest. If the company requires it, then it interferes with rest. If someone voluntarily messes with their EFB it's not considered to have interrupted rest.

Skywest requires an update before every fdp, needs to be same calendar day as fdp

I've gotten into arguments about how absurdly stupid this is

Wow. It also sets up the possibility of bricking the EFB during a trip. Delta requires us to not do updates during trips for that very reason.

So I admit that I don't understand the full legalities of this.

I update my EFB the night before my trip at home, is that technically duty?

The CQ training stuff I do on the road. I never do them at home, so if I'm at a hotel mid rest period and I start doing those, that kicks off the duty clock?

Unless your company is more restrictive than 117, Part 117 says any company business you voluntarily do in your free time is not considered duty or an action that interrupts rest. If you are required to do a task outside of a normal duty period then it is considered to have interrupted your rest and you need the minimum rest before beginning your next FDP.

In your examples, you're voluntarily doing those things during your rest period. It wouldn't count towards FDP or mess up your rest.
