Southwest Airlines Considers The Airbus A220
#21
I’d think there’s a lot of opportunities for the A220 to work for us. The -300 is basically a 737-700 replacement, which is self explanatory since it’s more efficient and the -700’s are getting old. If they bought -100’s as well, that would open up smaller airports we don’t currently serve where 140 seats is too much. One of SWA’s biggest weaknesses is that lack of service to airports where a 737 doesn’t make sense.
Totally agree on service to midsize cities we don’t currently serve. Take a look at all of the mainline and LCC service to Knoxville, Tennessee as an example. We are conspicuously absent.

If what I’m hearing from my Delta buddies is correct, it’s better than a -700 replacement because of superior runway performance and longer range. Might open up city pairs that were previously unthought of in the 700.

And Fresno! Don't forget Fresno! We could open up the KFAT-KPNS market...

Can we go back to discussing the A220 and it’s possible merits and/or demerits for SWA? As a follow on “food for thought”......how and will we get compensated by Boeing for their #$&k up on the MAX? Anyone have any solid info on that?
More MAX at discount prices? A lump sum damages payment? Or.....???

I’m betting the company will be made whole out of a combination of Boeing’s mondo insurance policy and super cheap maxii that we take from cancellations.
I’m more concerned how this affects employees profit sharing.

All good stuff and speculation but does anyone in the know have an idea of how this is truly being handled?

I think it would depend entirely on payscales, but my guess would be junior, depending on domiciles and where the flying was projected. It would throw a real twist into crew planning and it's probably not an airplane that makes sense with fewer than several hundred airframes on property. But it does seem an ideal replacement for the -700s. The MAX7 doesn't seem to be a 1-to-1 replacement but I don't really know the economics.
The question is whether or not a larger variant than the -300 is in the works. I'm sure they don't wish to compete with their own A320 though.
Tangentially, before I was at SWA I assumed everyone loved the 737. That love is far from universal I've found, even among folks who have loads of experience in it. I've flown with many folks who have flown other types of large airplanes and almost without exception they comment on the shortcomings of the 737. This lack of love for the airplane caught me a bit off guard because SWA and the 737 are so closely aligned.
