It's not about having a leg up on training, it's about having a box checked that still accounts for some serious points in the eval process, especially if you're lacking in other areas such as previous LCA, Safety or Mgmt positions. SWA uses a scoring system and the 737 type counts for many points.

Type rating
I’m new to the company, so I am purely speculating, but it seems a ton of people are getting hired with no 737 rating. So not sure how important it is. Seems the hardest part is getting the interview . That being said, I can’t imagine a 737 rating not helping. Out of our interview class, only 1 was typed that got hired, and you can see the other class, from another reply, had only 4/30 typed. Who knows!! Best of luck to you either way!

If you have many of the other boxes checked off then sure, don't waste the money. But if you're lacking in other areas and can swing the cost then it's worth it to help get you selected by the computer. I know of two pilots here that couldn't get an interview and as soon as they got the type they were selected. Of course this was a few years ago so YMMV.

FWIW - I did not have a 737 type and I got an interview.
