The book Rich Dad, Poor Dad has an interesting perspective on unions for pilots. He’s obviously a free market proponent, but says flight crew need unions because FAA doesn’t go far enough to protect our QoL.

Representation for a potential company or FAA violation, passenger injury, crew issue, contract violation, etc is money in the bank.

Remember unions originated to protect workers from dangerous working conditions. Collective bargaining was a perk. Typically skilled labor doesn’t need to be unionized. (Doctors for example)
prob because hospital admins aren’t stupid enough to try and cut Dr pay/benefits when they can simply leave and work at another hospital in town with no negative effects.
