Looking at the total number of pilots hired at American since 2020 from FAPA:

2020: 356
2021: 581
2022: 1,941
2023 through the end of July: 1,306

That's 4,182 pilots hired since January 1, 2020.

Now, looking at APC age 65 retirements since January 1, 2020...

2020: 323
2021: 542
2022: 624
2023: 828

Total: 2,317

These figures do not include COVID retirements, early outs/medical retirements.

Just looking at the pilot numbers, AA might be a better deal than Delta or United now as American didn't hire nearly as many pilots and they may be on the upswing, so if one is to leave, the time would be now.

You don’t have to convince a mediator. They mediate, that’s it. Maybe it’s confusion from when Alaska ALPA agreed to binding arbitration a while back. That’s an arbitrator and they get to decide…but not a mediator.

The only thing a mediator needs to be convinced of is that the parties are entrenched and will no longer budge, so whatever tactics they have to get movement aren’t working anymore. Then they can pass that to the NMB to consider release.

Default CJO from AA and SWA, what to do?

I got a CJO in July from AA and got a CJO from SWA today. Due to military obligations I am not available till December of this year. I was not sure where to ask so figured this is the best place for now. Never imagined I would have multiple CJOs so now I am trying to decide which one to accept. Any advice on best course of action? I have read all the negativity on both the SWA and AA threads. But I am looking for honest opinions. Thanks for any help.

Aside from the obvious being where you want to live and bases…if you don’t have to commit until December, there may be more clarity on a SW contract by then. Widebodies, upgrade times, and rates all favor AA at the moment, but they are a contract ahead right now. Despite the differences in financial positions of the companies, both seem willing to furlough. SWAPA may knock it out of the park on rates and work rules this cycle, but if widebodies and early upgrade is important to you then AA may be the way to go. There are lots of work rule differences that may be deal breakers or insignificant, depending on your situation and what you value. If you have friends at each, specific questions about what you want to do and what it would look like there is a good way to go. Most nights at home, fewest days working, max pay, blocks of work/blocks off, fly certain airplane or to certain destinations…all these and countless more are unique goals that if taken as a top priority might push you one direction or another.

I had a CJO at both as well and I chose here. This was pre-contract clearly. The biggest reasons I did so were stability, time off, 3-day trips are the norm and flexibility. Upgrade times don’t bother me all that much, as I don’t want to sit reserve forever. WB flying isn’t my thing either.

the new ta is coming here in a few months. It will at least match the other 3 or it won’t go anywhere. Age 67 is also coming and you can expect upgrades to increase elsewhere, but not really here due to low retirements next 2 years.

tough choice. But drive to work first. The rest is extra.

Unless you live in a SWA base that isn’t serviced by AA…. Go to AA.
