March Vacancy Bid Thread

I personally believe that they will make SAN a base. the hiring numbers for the rest of year suggest the opening of another base. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but SAN has one of the largest number of RONs in the system. SWA just moved into a brand spanking new terminal. And in the latest networking video they emphasized how much they were planning on growing out of SAN, similar to the projected growth out of AUS. SWA already has the largest market share there. Sounds like the same formula as AUS.

I think it’s anyone’s guess as far as another base opening. Right now I kind of doubt anything is seriously in the works. If the hiring predictions come true, I think this will begin with 150 or so additional displacements and that it will be mostly nil by years end. Sustained hiring and upgrading fixes all ills when it comes to situations like this. I am not minimizing the pain at all. I really feel for anyone cross country commuting when they live in a base, I just think that if you throw enough bodies at the issue, it will go away. There will still be a few that got the boot in a major downsizing like Denver that can’t get back because of our stupid DRR system, but the crew planning numbers don’t account for any hiring at all.

If the company learned anything and does open another base, maybe they will staff it with new hires. More likely they'll grow it rapidly and displace another few hundred pilots. Someone else has said it, but new bases opening is bad for all pilots who don't live there. Only reprieve for SAN is that it would at least help heal the west coast displacements a bit. Denver displacements will just live in limbo forever till we announce a new fleet in 10 years. I like it here and genuinely enjoy going to work. However, the prospect of being a 4+ year FO till I can be based back at home only to be the plug has me rethinking options. I just wish the company had been honest with their intentions of downsizing Denver as I would have been updating apps a year ago. I understand the need to drawdown with lesser RON's but a 10% cut vs a 35% cut is night and day from a movement perspective. We need to make displacements costs this company a lot more than 6 grand or so per pilot.

I remember flying with countless captains who lived in MCO area and were displaced for 5-7 years because of senior guys moving there to retire. It truly sucks for the current displacements, but at least we have some sort of DRR. We had nothing previously.

Seniority is like a spring, it gets wound tighter and tighter over time until the tension is released in rapid fashion. Hiring & upgrades have potential to release the seniority pressure that Denver and the west coast has been under for the last 2 years.
I've seen it play out before, it usually takes about 3-4 months or 250 new hires before everyone but the new hires will end up where they want to be. I’d be surprised if we don’t see a few new hires in Denver by the end of this summer.

With the cascading secondary displacements, and the ability for senior pilots to outbid pilots with DRR it’s a nasty nest that’s going to be a mess to unwind.
