Don't count yourself out yet. We had a guy from our 18 Aug interview group have references called early on, did not meet the DB on 2 Sep, but did meet the most recent one and got the call yesterday. You may just end up in the next DB. Having your references called doesn't exactly mean you're going to meet the next DB.

If you want to save yourself some money, you will be issued a Telex 850 while you are in class. I wasn't a big fan of it but lots of guys use it on the line.
I use a Clarity Aloft and love it. Lots of other guys use the Bose headset and they also love it, just a bit too expensive for me right now.

For me it was more of the way the 850 felt on my head/ears, not necessarily the noise. It was just uncomfortable for me. The 850 is noise cancelling but I think my Clarity Aloft that does not have noise cancelling is a little quieter. I also have a Sennheiser HMEC 25-KA noise cancelling headset that I really liked but I need to have it repaired.
The 850 works and a lot of people use them. If you are unsure, just use the company provided 850 for s few months on line and ask guys you fly with about their headset. That way you can see and get opinions on several different kinds.

I use the 850. I was skeptical, but it works fine and keeps the din down to a reasonable level. The 737 cockpit is loud due to the avionics airflow and the annoying standby altimeter that SWA decided to buy (tick tick tick tick).
I like the 850 because it is lightweight and doesn't hurt my head after a long day. I used the Bose in a previous life and while it was better than the DC, it was uncomfortable on long flights because at the end of the day, it is a clamp.
I am also a bit annoyed by guys who use the noise canceling headsets and assume that you are in their peaceful, calm, serene world and whisper everything. I just keep saying "huh?" until they finally speak up even if I know what they said.

And sorry I meant we use the 750 in the MD-11 and I really like that. That's pretty nice they issue the 850. I thought about buying the Bose QC u fly mic, but will give the 850 a try first.

Cockpit on the 737 is the loudest jet airplane I've flown. The airflow is loud of front and the flat windshield doesn't help. For me in my mid 40s the Telex 850 just doesn't do the trick. I'm on my second pair of Clarity Alofts. Protects my bald spot and my hearing.

I see lots of QC15/UFM on the line. They're light, durable, great NC, and relatively cost effective compared to others. I'm sure you can find QC15's on ebay for <$100 and buy the UFM for another $250 or so. I use it and love it.
