The funny thing I keep hearing is people saying “we have great quality of life so we will never get legacy rates”. well so what about WN? They are able to have both. With our inability to ever move up to a widebody we should at minimum get legacy bus rates and have the best work rules. or else good luck retaining newbies.

I’ve heard a lot of things about WN but great QOL isn’t one of them. We should have and need both tho if they want to try to keep this airline functional until JB takes over.

Retaining people costs more than training new people. The goal of the airline is not to have as many people who are 20 year captains as they can. The goal is to probably have a small but reasonable amount of longevity with a majority of the group sitting at less than 10 year and most of those less than 5. That’s cheaper labor for them. Why pay someone $250/hr when they can save almost $40/hr paying someone with less years and probably just as qualified. Being a budget airline means looking at unique ways to cut costs and that’s one way.

They’re trying to grow the airline, and are adding tons of planes in the next year. This won’t happen if they can’t keep people to fly them.

You sure about that “great QOL” at Swa? I suppose if you consider the ability to work your tail off so you have more days off, “great QOL”.

Ever talk to a SWA senior pilot and how they have to overload their December schedule to prevent being able to be used on Christmas?

The NC has already says red/green and drop is a non starter. Beyond on, let’s also not act like your QOL here is super fantastic.

Okay, I went back and read the post that prompted mine; I misread it. Thanks.

most senior guys can bid xmas off or get it off through vacation. There's no loading up schedule to get xmas off. The only thing people can do is if in reserve, fly more beginning of month to get utilization up to hope to not be called over xmas. And those guys are junior

Maybe you can clarify: SWA CA tells me he can finish up a trip as a line holder and get sent back out if scheduling needs it covered. So he tells me guys will stack their schedule leading up to Christmas so they would be “illegal” to get sent back out. So at SWA, can you be sent back out, JRM/Extended as a line holder once back in base?

Simple answer at an airline I used to work at that would do this and “roll days off”:

“Sorry I’m not available. I’ve got to be home to watch my kids”.

Game over
