All of this is from a diagnosis of depression and counseling from over a decade ago…long before I started flying. The limit on mental health coverage is 24 months.

Surprised this wasn’t an issue with the numerous medicals you received before you were grounded, since this predates your flying. Not my business, sorry you’re stuck in the FAA “pile,” I know others in the same position.

Airline capacity is too great, according to Delta. It is why they arent making more money, and the overall capacity needs to decrease. And with the amount of influence the CEOs at the legacy airlines hold, they are likely to get their way and overall capacity will be cut. At this point, it will actually benefit the politicans if Spirit goes away.

“Why they aren’t marking money”. I assume that quote doesn’t refer to the aforementioned Delta

Correct. Delta *ONLY* made $1.31B due to oversaturation in the market. There are too many "low cost carrier" seats to be truly profitable. For the size of the operation, $1.31B is not enough for their shareholders, evidently.

No idea what happened in this guy's case, but there has been a history of the FAA "revisting" PRNC medical conditions years later for whatever reason. Especially for mental health issues. In this case the timing smacks of maybe being some barn door slamming after the mushroom incident.

FAA can either re-open cases unilaterally, or direct AMEs to scrutinize applicants more carefully.

If you have anything like that in your file, and the AME asks about how things are going, are you busy, are you stressed... be careful what you say. They might not just be making small talk.

Speaking of mushrooms; treat your AMEs like mushrooms (keep them in the dark and feed them crap) for this very reason. No matter how much the FAA has “evolved” to handle mental health issues, they are still in the 1950s and not to be trusted.

so if you’re out on LTD for a mental health issue, it stops at 24 months?

It does. Which is dumb. No reason for it. If anything it further deters people from getting help.

the unfortunate reason for this is the number of fellow pilots that would fake mental illness so they can sit at home and get paid. It’s not like a broken bone where you have proof. Insurance companies hate mental illness, there is no set timeline for when you are better so they try to limit coverage to a set time regardless of your progress. I have a kid that spend 2 years in a residential psychiatric faculty. I was told insurance would only pay for 3 month, luckily. They paid 18, but that was an anomaly.

we spend 747 Billion dollars a year in this country to keep grandma alive for 6 extra months. We spend nothing on mental health care.

that’s all I have to say about that.
