Spirit Now Sure As It Emerges From Bankruptcy
#651
I think a lot of pilots are taking the approach to just wait for an acquisition and slide onto a more stable airline's pilot seniority list. Its a legitimate strategy.
Eastern went BK and was a much larger airline than Spirit. They were the largest airline domestically in the US for total enplanements less than 6 years before they shut down and 3rd largest behind United and Delta. Obviously not that large when they closed their doors because they started shrinking, but a lot of pilots there said the same thing about going out of business. Same at PanAm.

You can't compare # of planes. The entire industry was smaller back then. United was the largest airline in the world with 320 mainline planes total and had a 17% of market share. PanAm had around 8% market share when they went out of business which is almost double Spirit's market share today.

You might as well just multiply 3 to Eastern and PanAm plane counts to make a fair comparison. Both Eastern and PanAm were much larger proportionate airlines.

I think we hit a sore spot. Guessing you are an ULCC pilot too. I fly my A321 for Delta for $365.88 an hour as a year 3 Captain. Your year 12 Captains do it for $270. I get a very large profit sharing check on V Day every year. Your pilots don't. I work for a company that values me. Your pilots don't. I chose to leave a sh!t stain airline that didn't value me, you and many other like you chose to stay. We fly the same airways and the same aircraft to the same cities. Your pilots just do it for about half the compensation I make every day. Life is full of choices. Enjoy yours and I'll enjoy mine.
Good grief man. Look at your post. At first I thought, this guys gotta be kidding. Now I’m starting to realize, you’re the guy at Delta that every one makes the joke about. The one that everyone knows is a Delta pilot. Because you tell everyone. Everyone knows exactly how much you make and how much your car costs. You must wake up every morning and just **** excellence. Don’t you?
Poor ole ULCC pilots (I guess this is a limitation on our ATP?) walking around wishing they were REAL pilots. Maybe you could teach us all how to be a better stick up there. And we’ll teach you a little bit about modesty and personal character. Deal?

Spirit is obviously in serious financial trouble, and nobody is more aware of it than those who work there. If someone wants to stay and ride it out or get out as soon as they can, who cares? That’s their business. Some are too senior or old to want to start over, some aren’t competitive in today’s hiring market to go somewhere else, some are leaving, while others are simply rolling the dice. They know the potential risks involved here. Let them make their decisions based on what they think is best for themselves. Constantly rubbing their faces in it 24/7 is kind of a dick move.
