Because the group that ran United after the merger was to scared to do what should have been done.

IAH should have never been a 787 base, the plane was always going to be used off the coasts.

LAX 777 flying has all gone to the 787.

GUM has lost most of its tag flying, United has pulled back on intra asia flights. The loss of NRT - ICN over staffed the base.

The 747 is being parked and the flying is being taken over by the 77W.

Other than the Asia tag flying no routes are being lost and all aircraft are just being replaced with other aircraft. Its nothing to be worried about it just should have happened along time ago. Having the airline properly staffed in all seats and bases, as well as having the wide bodies on the routes they want them on will give all of us more stability.

I would emphasize that it's all movement of the deck chairs and not a loss of flying. Take for example the 737 in GUM. Network planning wants to increase domestic lift so they pulled planes from GUM where they weren't being utilized to their full potential. I believe the company said it was the equivalent of getting a whole plane of lift extra compared to the usage the planes were getting in GUM. The 747 is another good example. All the routes the 747s were doing are simply being moved to other fleets and mostly being covered by the 14 new 777s. The 747 was also being under utilized because of reliability. In other words it took 20 planes to do the work of what should have been 14. The 787 IAH base was initially created because of politics and the SLI not because they were optimizing 787 usage. Now that the SLI is mostly forgotten (at least from managements standpoint) Network planning is focused on what it should be, namely the optimum use of equipment and that was not IAH for the 787.

Bumps are no fun if it pushes you out of a base such as might be the case for GUM pilots, but my guess is you will see a couple huge bids before the end of this year that will make any pain being felt now much more tolerable.

Should I just put 60% down and hope for the best or should I put 50% down??
That's a tough one KD. It is your percentage based on the number of total peeps in the BES at the time of the award (existing plus bumped in). So I would be liberal with your percentage bid. You don't have to put anything in the percentage column if you will accept any percentage. 80% will likely keep you off RSV. Just my 2 cents.

Stand by for a lot of interest in reserve rules from pilots "choosing" to be on reserve. It is a choice, right?

Other than possibly a GUM Guppy FO, everyone can bid a BES that has them flying a line.

The rest are WB pilots. They can all hold lines in the system. So you were right, it's a choice. There may be some new short term reserves if the choose not to volunteer.

It's not the ones displaced, its the effect on who is below the g-line in the bases where they go and the bases they leave behind.

And then there are those in the next 12 months who "choose" to commute. It is a choice, right?
