Apparently they flow more “naturally” on those sought after all nighters from Central America and Caribbean as well.

I grew up in an airline household. In the 50's-70's, red eyes were a very small part of any airline schedule. Most of the fleet sat on the ground at night in maintenance or repair. The same could be said euphemistically for the pilots.

I remember when Eastern started a red eye LAX-ATL departure in late 70's. Many were skeptical, but they filled the belly with mail. Seats were cheap and the flight was usually full. I got left behind a couple times on a mil stdby ticket.

I too was based in SFO in the early 80's and flew coast to coast redeys, (freight) both ways. I was senior but gave it up for daytime "airline flying". My first month on the line was doing red eyes in the 10.

Thankfully very very few red eyes on the east coast these days, I think they shafted all the SFO and LAX guys with them. Plus the 737 lost its transcons to sfo and lax to the 757/777. Red eyes are painful.

I've done 1...that 0130 LAS-IAH flight. I've successfully avoided them so far. I kinda feel guilty about that. Maybe I need to pick up one or 2 so I can check that box

Ha! Most freight dogs dont fly nights as much as passenger airline guys, and when they do, they get a nap in a bed!

You guys don't know what redeyes are.

Flying a transcon for 4.5 hours when it's dark is a piece of cake compared to flying from NRT to SFO unaugmented and having the sun come up over the middle of the Pacific with 5 more hours to go on a 10.5 hour flight.

Fortunately, those days are no more...Augmenting, CPDLC and ADS-B have transformed the job for the better.

Funny how busy IIU and MEM are each night with nobody flying.

10.5 hours on NRT-SFO? What were you doing .72 and routing up over ANC?

Rope start?

I love the thinking behind that.. "Hey there are three of you up there, so y'all won't be tired."
