Nice color.
You are painfully accurate in your threat assessment.

CAL had new hires on the 777 in EWR.

It doesn't seem like the management at TK would make the decision to do this. This idea had to come from Labor Relations in Chicago. I won't be surprised to see a grievance on this and I would personally stay away from applying to something like this until we hear more from the MEC.
TK is currently cancelling Line Pilot MVs and LOEs that sit in PI overtime and go unfilled. They are very short PIs. They just hired a crap ton but there are limited transition/upgrade courses going on right now, which new PIs need to observe/teach. (plenty of MV/LOEs, but that is not what new PIs learn on).

And PLEASE don't start the whole "manpower negative" narrative. That's just a union word for limiting a pilot's ability to make some serious cheddar.
"More jobs! more jobs"!! WHY? We owe everything to every pilot on the seniority list. We owe NOTHING to guys who WANT to be on the seniority list (until they get hired). 1950s BS union rules that limit productivity only increase the Company's costs and make them uncompetitive....which of course leads to furloughs (so much for jobs!)

I admire SWAPA. They once sent a letter to their Company basically saying "QUIT HIRING PILOTS"!! The line pilots were squawking about the lack of overtime and open time. LOL. Can you imagine that here at ol' UAL?? At that same time, we still had an 83 hour CREDIT (not actual) cap. That just inflated our ranks. Lots of hiring. But when the crap hit the fan, we furloughed 2200 pilots. Hmmmm.

PIs can only work 3 overtime events a month. With 13 RDOs that’s all you can really get anyway. There’s not enough PIs to “play” student, teach the new PI, observe the new PI and continue to run a normal load of real students.

Will you change your view if there is a grievance against this?

I understand your point but the shortage of PI's isn't the contract's fault. It's the fault of the company for not hiring more aggressively at TK over the last couple few years.

It doesn't seem odd to you that the company said we would be approaching 18,000 pilots by now but we're short on PI's with only 13,000 pilots? The timing of this doesn't seem odd to you?

It doesn't bother you that they've basically said that they're going to do this out of seniority and that you may basically be disqualified based on where your domicile is or where you live?

It seems odd to me that a 12 year 777 or 787 FO on reserve can come in and be a pretend student and make more than their 20 year PI that's capped at 9th year pay?

There is more to this than just being short on PI's.

I had a chat with a friend who's a guppy PI. He's pulling down quite a bit of cheddar; much more than I would as a 777 FO flying 90 hrs/mo on yr 12 pay. I'd need to do ~130 hrs/mo to make the same.

Either he was lying to me or PIs are getting a ton of credit hours every month.

This isnt' hard to compute: Read section 23 and you know exactly what a I/E makes. Its based on what he can hold F/O(not standard captains for this discussion) at 9 year widebody first officer cap. Then add 800-1300 per month depending on what your evaluator status is.

then there is a max of 3 overtime events. end of story. no rumor just facts.

The CQ cancellations are on one fleet primarily, the 737. Ask council 93 why this is happening. It has to do with a hangover where privilege determined who would be checked out to do events such as CQ. There are large numbers who have been left idle for up to two years. They aren't short. They are underutilized because an instructor has not been fully checked out in all events.

Some of you can't see that this is a trial balloon. Take a look at the Company wish list. There is this item below...

--Discuss Instructor/Evaluators (e.g., permit retired Pilots to be Instructors), modify
Instructor/Evaluator reassignment and release rules and introduce line flying flex--

Try to look past this month of May offer. They don't want to do this to increase the number of PI's in the building. They want to be able to reduce the number of PI's in the future. And I think they want to be able to have one instructor run the sim and do your seat support at the same time. They basically want to hire FTI's to not only do your FTDA's but your FTDB's and sim training too.
