I think what’s missing here is that career fairs (of any type) are major fundraisers for the organization hosting, a mixture of PR and recruiting for the vendors (more PR now that so much of HR hiring compliance solutions are channeled through online systems), while completely recruiting for the attendees.

So the pilot attendees view them only through their lens. It’s important to step back and look at the whole picture. I was involved in running career fairs (non aviation) in a past life and they are huge cash cows for non-profit type organizations where the labor to organize them is free and the prize is valuable enough that attendees will attend regardless.

COVID-19 effects on Pilot demand | Audries Aircraft Analysis
This article isolates the effect of this virus to the Pacific and primarily China. It does not grasp the scope of this spreading across the whole globe including the United States. There are various scenarios that could play out but most will put an extreme stress on airlines including United. Hopefully the virus spread will slow/stop during the summer months but most experts predict it returning in the fall. In a year of two we will have a vaccine but in the meantime air travel is going to be depressed even domestically. The company I am sure is working on various contingencies.

Hysteria? Bookings are taking a nose dive and our company is not going to fly empty airplanes around. You might not want to hear it, but the entire world is responding to this, and it isn’t a conspiracy against Donald Trump.

Maybe so, but that is out of our hands. All United (and other airlines) can do is respond accordingly. I’m hoping it is just what you state but planning for the worst.
